CWRU Drops Series Finale to Brandeis, 8-2

Despite collecting 10 hits in the game, the Case Western Reserve University baseball team struggled to score on Sunday, dropping its series finale 8-2 against Brandeis University at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland.

The two teams split the opening series of conference play, with each ending the weekend with a 2-2 University Athletic Association record. The Spartans fell to 13-9 overall, while Brandeis improved to 9-8 following Sunday's action.

Stats & Standouts

  • Despite taking the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year, sophomore right-handed pitcher Eric Colgrove struck out a career-high 11 batters in four and a third innings of work. He allowed just two hits and three walks, but yielded four total runs, with just one being earned.

  • CWRU committed three errors in the contest, resulting in five unearned runs.

  • First-year James O'Connor went two-for-five with a double, the team's only extra base hit of the day, while also stealing a base.

  • Junior designated hitter Tyler Stillson, senior outfielder Jasiah Harris, and senior shortstop Nate Arterburn each had two hits in the game for CWRU.

  • Brandeis' John Milewski earned the win, striking out eight batters over five innings to improve to 1-0 on the year.

Highlights & Scoring Recap

  • Brandeis took advantage of a two-out error in the top of the third to score a run and take a 1-0 lead.

  • CWRU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take its first lead of the game. Arterburn started the inning by beating out a base hit to short, and graduate student first baseman Eli Westrick followed with a bunt single. A walk to Stillson loaded the bases, and two runs crossed the plate when the next batter, sophomore third baseman Calvin Gelle, beat out a potential double play at first base.

  • An error in the top of the fifth inning helped four runs cross the plate for the Judges, as Brandeis took a 5-3 advantage.

  • The Spartans brought the tying run to the plate in the fifth and sixth innings, but would be unable to take advantage of either opportunity.

  • The Judges added on two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, and CWRU would be unable to score again in the contest.

Spartan Notes

  • Sunday's loss ended a stretch of 12 consecutive UAA series wins for the Spartans, dating back to the 2023 season.

  • The Spartans fell to 39-29 all-time against Brandeis following the loss.

  • Senior outfielder Thomas Downs has now hit safely in seven straight games, while Stillson extended his hitting streak to six games.

  • The Spartans stand at 82-35-1 in UAA games since the start of site play in 2017.

  • CWRU is now 8-4 this season when collecting 10 or more hits in a game.
