The Case Western Reserve University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader for the first time this season, losing the first game 18-8 in eight innings and the second contest 7-1 to Emory University at Chappell Park in Atlanta on Friday.
The Spartans, who have lost three straight games, fell to 13-11 overall with a 2-4 University Athletic Association mark, while Emory improved to 16-9 overall with a 5-1 UAA record.

CWRU pitching struck out 10 batters, but issued 15 walks, and one hit batter during the contest. The Eagles outhit the Spartans 12-11.

Emory took advantage of an error to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the first.

The Spartans rallied with two outs and the bases empty in the top of the third to score a pair of runs. After a walk to junior Tyler Stillson and a base hit from sophomore third baseman Calvin Gelle put runners on the corners, senior outfielder Matt Trout drove in CWRU's first run of the game with a single through the right side. Gelle scored on a wild pitch a batter later to cut the Emory lead to 3-2.

The Eagles expanded their lead with four runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 7-2.

CWRU scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run single from graduate student first baseman Eli Westrick to trim the Eagles' advantage to three runs, 7-4.

Emory blew the game open with seven runs on seven walks, a hit batter, and two hits against the Spartan bullpen in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 14-4 lead.

The Spartans staved off an early ending with two runs in the top of the seventh, scoring on an RBI double by Gelle and a sacrifice fly from senior outfielder Jasiah Harris.

Emory added on a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Spartans were able to answer with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by first-year James O'Connor and a sacrifice fly from Stillson.

The Eagles put an early end to the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth to invoke the 10-run rule.

Stillson started the game on the mound and suffered the loss in the game, dropping to 4-2, after allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks with eight strikeouts over five innings.

Emory starter Josh Zuckerman earned the win in the game, improving to 3-2 for the season.

The Spartans evened the score in the top of the second, when first-year catcher Collin Pool doubled and scored later in the inning on a squeeze bunt by junior shortstop Nate Arterburn.

Emory added three more runs in the sixth and one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings to pull away late for the 7-1 win.

Sophomore starter Charlie Griffith suffered the loss, dropping to 1-3 on the year after allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks in five innings, while striking out five batters.

Emory's Owen Stone picked up the win, improving to 4-0.

The Spartans were out-hit 14-5 in the game and committed four errors. Pool finished the contest two-for-four with a run scored.Â

Friday marked the first time the Spartans have been swept in a doubleheader since February 25, 2023, when the team lost two games to Chicago.

The Spartans stand at 82-37-1 in UAA games since the start of site play in 2017. CWRU will need to sweep a doubleheader tomorrow to avoid ending a stretch of 13-straight UAA meetings without a series loss, dating back to the 2023 campaign.

CWRU is now 27-41 all-time against Emory, including an 11-11 record in games played in Atlanta.
