Case Western Reserve University junior Tyler Stillson threw a nine-inning complete game in the second of two games on Saturday to lead the Spartans to a split at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational in Washington, Pennsylvania. The Spartans suffered an 11-6 loss to the University of Scranton in the first game, before coming away with a 5-1 win over host Washington & Jefferson College in the second contest of the day.
The Spartans now stand at 4-1 overall, while Scranton is 2-2, and Washington & Jefferson is 2-1.

Stillson stole the show in the second game of the day, going the distance to pick up his second win in as many starts this season in the outing against Washington & Jefferson. He allowed just one unearned run on three hits with two walks and struck out a career-high 11 hitters. Stillson needed just 110 pitches to navigate the outing.

At the plate, first-year first baseman Tucker Greer made the first two starts of his career and collected four hits in eight at-bats, including a double and a triple, and drove in two runs while scoring a third.

The Spartans scored a pair of runs in the top of the first with first-year catcher Collin Pool and Greer each plating a run with a single.

Scranton answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but junior shortstop Nate Arterburn singled with one out, stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on an error in the top of the second to even the score at 3-3.

The Royals added a run in the bottom of the third to regain the lead, but senior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski was able to avoid further damage, leaving the bases loaded in the inning.

Sophomore left fielder Evan Garbincus evened the score in the top of the fifth, driving in senior center fielder Jasiah Harris with a groundout, and the Spartans took the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single up the middle by Pool.

Scranton scored a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead, 6-5.

The Spartans tied the game again in the seventh, when sophomore third baseman Calvin Gelle tripled and scored on a wild pitch with two outs.

The Royals answered again with a run in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead 7-6.

CWRU loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but a strikeout ended the frame with the potential tying and go-ahead runners still on the basepaths.

Scranton added four runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away late for the five-run win.

Senior right fielder Matt Trout went three-for-four with a double, a walk, and a run scored.

Junior Zach Barnes pitched 3.1 innings in relief, giving up just three hits and striking out a pair, but allowed one earned run and three total to suffer the loss, falling to 0-1 on the campaign.

Stillson threw the first nine-inning complete game by a Spartan since Reece Marley notched one in a 5-3 win over Brandeis on April 5, 2024.

He retired the first eight batters he faced in the game, did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, and did not surrender a run until a two-out error in the ninth allowed the first runner of the game to score for the Presidents.

CWRU broke through for a run in the bottom of the third when Garbincus doubled to lead off the frame, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a groundout by first-year second baseman James O'Connor.

Two innings later, first-year third baseman Jaxon Knutson hit a hard line drive that got past a diving attempt at a catch by the Washington and Jefferson center fielder. Knutson was able to round the bases and score for the inside the park home run, the first home run this season hit by a Spartan, extending the lead to 2-0.

In the sixth inning, a two-out triple by senior catcher Sean Donahue scored Trout and put CWRU in front 3-0.

The Spartans added on two more runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Greer and a run-scoring single up the middle from Donahue.

Saturday's game was the first-ever meeting between the Spartans and the Royals.

CWRU has now won three-straight games against Washington & Jefferson and seven of the last eight. The Spartans are 12-5 against the Presidents since the 2013 campaign.
