#11 Spartans Drop Finale at W&J Invitational

The 11th-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team ended play at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational in Washington, Pennsylvania, with a 5-1 loss to the Presidents on Sunday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 4-2 on the season, while the Presidents improved to 3-1.

Stats & Standouts


  • Junior shortstop Nate Arterburn had two of the team's five hits in the game, going two-for-three in the contest.

  • First-year third baseman James O'Connor, senior center fielder Jasiah Harris, and first-year right fielder Cole White also had hits for the Spartans during the game.

  • Sophomore left-handed pitcher Charlie Griffith suffered the loss, despite allowing just two runs on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts over two and two-thirds innings.

  • Sophomore southpaw Jeff Radinsky pitched two and a third scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and allowing just one hit.

  • Sophomore right Oliver Miller added an inning and a third of scoreless relief work.

Highlights & Scoring Recap


  • Washington & Jefferson broke through for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead over the Spartans.

  • CWRU loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth and got on the board when junior designated hitter Tyler Stillson was hit by a pitch, scoring Harris.

  • The Presidents added on another run in the sixth to push their lead back to two runs, 3-1.

  • CWRU had a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning, but were unable to plate him, and the Presidents added two in the eighth to push their lead to 5-1.

Spartan Notes


  • Sunday's loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Spartans against Washington & Jefferson. The Spartans are 12-6 against the Presidents since the 2013 campaign and have won seven of the last nine matchups.

CWRU will return home to host a single game against Oberlin College on Wednesday, March 4, at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
