First-Year Hitters & Solid Pitching Leads #14 Spartans to Series Sweep of Oswego State

Case Western Reserve University first-years James O'Connor and Collin Pool drove in two runs each and sophomore Charlie Griffith pitched five shutout innings to help lead the 14th-ranked Spartans to a 10-3 win over Oswego State University on Saturday, completing a sweep of the Lakers in the three-game series at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland.

The Spartans stand at 3-0 overall on the season, while Oswego State dropped to 0-3.

Stats & Standouts

  • The Spartans out-hit the Lakers 13-5 in the contest.

  • O'Connor, who saw time in left field and at second base on Saturday, went two-for-three with a triple, a stolen base, two runs, two RBIs, and a walk.

  • Making his second start of the season at catcher, Pool went two-for-five with a double and a pair of RBIs, while throwing out three would-be base stealers in the game.

  • On the mound, Griffith needed just 71 pitches to navigate the first five innings, allowing three hits and a walk with five strikeouts, en route to picking up his first win of the campaign.

  • Senior right fielder Matt Trout and sophomore third baseman Calvin Gelle each had two hits on Saturday.

  • Sophomore Jeff Radinsky struck out a pair over an inning and a third in a hitless relief effort.

  • Sophomore Anton Sabo added a scoreless ninth inning in relief with two strikeouts and a walk.

Highlights & Scoring Recap

  • CWRU jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first. The Spartans took advantage of three walks and a hit batter during the frame, and Pool picked up a run-scoring single.

  • Pool extended the Spartans' lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, plating Trout on an RBI double.

  • The Lakers scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Spartans' lead in half, and had the potential game-tying runs on first and third with one out. However, Radinsky entered the game and quickly escaped the jam without another run scoring, striking out a batter, and getting a caught stealing.

  • The Spartans answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly from junior shortstop Nate Arterburn, and RBI singles from O'Connor and junior first baseman Tyler Stillson.

  • In the seventh, first-year outfielder Elijah Sledge drove in the first run of his career with a sacrifice fly, O'Connor added a sacrifice fly of his own, and Arterburn scored on a passed ball, pushing the Spartans' lead to 10-2.

  • Oswego scored in the eighth to cut the Spartans' lead to seven runs, but Sabo's scoreless ninth closed out the CWRU victory.
