The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis duo of senior Lily McCloskey and junior Katalina Wang saw their program-record tying run end in three sets in the quarterfinals of the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Doubles Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Biszantz Tennis Center in Claremont, California.
McCloskey and Wang, unseeded and ranked 24th nationally by the ITA, fell 6-0, 4-6, 4-6 to fourth-seeded and fifth-ranked Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou from Pomona-Pitzer. The Spartan pairing ended the season with a record of 18-6, while the Sagehen duo bettered their record to 15-6.
After falling behind 3-1 in the decisive final set, the Case Western Reserve partnership battled back, tying the score at three by breaking the Pomona-Pitzer serve and holding its own serve. Both teams held serve on the next three points, leading to a 5-4 advantage for the Sagehens. McCloskey and Wang could not hold on to the final point, dropping the set 6-4 and the match in three sets.
The run to the quarterfinals matches the furthest for any pair in program history, accomplished by McCloskey and Hannah Kassaie in 2022 and Nithya Kanagasegar and Madeline Paolucci in 2018. With their win in the first round on Saturday, both McCloskey and Wang earned All-America honors for CWRU.
McCloskey ended her doubles career with a record of 85-24, the most wins in program history. Wang dropped to 50-24 in doubles matches across three seasons.
The loss marks the end of the 2024-25 season for both the Case Western Reserve women's tennis team and all Spartan varsity athletic teams.
