What's at Stake

CWRU will be aiming to win the Super Regional and earn its first trip to the NCAA Division III Championship in program history. While CWRU has never made it to the Super Regional before, the Spartans have reached the final of the regional in both 2013 and 2014, an equivalent position to reaching the Super Regional.

The Format

This weekend will be a best-of-three format between the two teams, with the first team to win two games advancing to the final site of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio, from May 30 - June 5. Johns Hopkins will be the home team for the first game, while the Spartans will be the home team for the second contest. A coin flip will be used to determine the home team for the third game, if necessary.

The Spartans

CWRU will enter the weekend with a 30-12-1 overall record and earned its berth into the NCAA Tournament by winning the 2025 University Athletic Association Championship and the conference's first-ever automatic bid. The Spartans went on to go 3-0 in the NCAA Regional, including a 12-9 win over 16th-ranked Centre. The team has won a season-high eight straight games, scoring at least 10 runs in each of the victories. CWRU has an 11-6 road record this year. The Spartans are batting .333 and averaging 9.4 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a 6.03 ERA with a .274 opponents' average.

The top hitters this season for the Spartans include senior outfielder Nick Harms (.406, 14 HRs, 57 RBI), graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen (.380, 17 HRs, 55 RBIs), graduate student catcher Jack Anderson (.377, 4 HRs, 41 RBIs), graduate student infielder Franco Alonso (.358, 2 HRs, 23 RBIs), sophomore infielder Tyler Stillson (.355, 8 HRs, 47 RBIs), and graduate student infielder Zack Carinci (.341, 1 HR, 27 RBIs). The team's top pitching options include junior righty Archer Stankowski (6-1, 4.70 ERA), sophomore lefty Quinn Saunders (3-1, 3.61 ERA), first-year Oliver Miller (3-1, 3.64 ERA), and Stillson (2-0, 5.01 ERA).

The Spartans are under the leadership of Head Coach Matt Englander, who has gone 449-296-3 during his 19 years at the team's helm.

The Blue Jays

Johns Hopkins, the top-ranked team in Division III, stands at 42-3 for the season and a perfect 25-0 at home (the team has won 31 consecutive home games dating back to the 2024 season). The Blue Jays went 17-1 in Centennial Conference play during the regular season and went on to go 3-0 in the conference tournament to clinch the league's automatic bid. Johns Hopkins then won all three of its regional games, advancing to the Super Regional with a 17-5 win against RPI. This will be the Blue Jays' third-straight appearance in the Super Regional round, and the team stands at 73-53 in its 26 NCAA Tournament appearances, including one second-place finish. The team is hitting .341 this season and averaging 10.2 runs per game while the pitching staff has a 3.51 ERA with a .224 opponents' batting average.

Among the top hitters on the team are Dillon Souvignier (.417, 16 HRs, 60 RBIs), Jimmy Stevens (.386, 17 HRs, 62 RBIs), Shawn Steuerer (.383, 16 HRs, 54 RBIs), and Caleb Cyr (.340, 10 HRs, 39 RBIs).  Top pitchers include starters Drew Grumbles (8-0, 1.65 ERA), Kieren Collins (8-1, 3.48 ERA), and Quinn Rovner (7-0, 4.84 ERA), along with Grant Meert (1-0, 0.90 ERA, 5 saves) out of the bullpen.

Johns Hopkins is led by Head Coach Bob Babb, the winningest active head coach in Division III baseball with a 1,344-481-16 career record. Approaching the end of his 46th season, Babb has announced his retirement at the end of the 2025 campaign.

Matchup History

The Spartans and the Blue Jays have met 11 times previously, all when Johns Hopkins was a member of the UAA and played each other annually at the conference tournament in Cocoa Beach, Florida. This weekend's games will be the first meetings between the two teams since the 2001 campaign. CWRU stands at 4-7 all-time against Johns Hopkins.

Spartan Notes

  • Camphausen will enter the weekend second among all active NCAA Division III players with 61 career home runs and just one shy of the active leader, Dane Jones of LeTorneau.

  • Anderson currently has 297 hits, the third most among active Division III players. He is just three hits away from becoming the 10th player in the history of Division III baseball to eclipse 300 career hits.

  • The Spartans have now scored 404 runs this season and are just five away from matching the program record of 409 runs set by the 2011 squad.

  • CWRU has already set program single-season records with 49 home runs and 108 stolen bases (on 119 attempts) this season.

  • The Spartans, who are making their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance all-time, stand at 18-14 in tournament play.
