Case Western Reserve University graduate student thrower Michaela Burkhauser won the University Athletic Association championship in the discus throw to lead the Spartan women's track and field team on the second and final day of the 2025 UAA Outdoor Championships held at Icahn Stadium in Manhattan, New York.
Burkhauser won the event with a toss of 45.06 meters, more than three meters better than the second-place finisher. It was her first career UAA title, second All-UAA honor at the championship, and fourth All-UAA honor of her career. She is the first Spartan to win the event since Cassandra Laios in 2019, and it was Case Western Reserve's sixth all-time championship in the event since the first conference meet in 1988.
Overall, the Spartans placed fourth out of seven teams in the league with 96.0 points. WashU won the conference title with 222.0 points, followed by Emory with 189.0 points and Chicago with 134.0 points. Trailing CWRU were Carnegie Mellon (63.5 points), Brandeis (63.0), and NYU (43.5).
The runner-up in the discus throw was junior thrower Michelle Lee, who recorded a mark of 41.87 meters to earn her third career All-UAA honor. Senior thrower Lauren Roskuszka placed fourth with a toss of 40.77 meters to add five additional points to the Spartan total.
First-year thrower Sarah Viveiros earned her first career All-UAA honor by placing second in the javelin throw with a toss of 38.46 meters. The Spartans have had a top three finisher in the event at the last eight outdoor championships in a streak that dates back to 2016. Junior thrower Madison Martinez and first-year thrower Bailey Bowen placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the event with throws of 35.17 meters and 34.80 meters.
Junior runner Lauren Iagnemma finished the 5,000-meter run in 17:19.41 to place sixth and earn three points for CWRU.
Both the 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay placed sixth for Case Western Reserve. The shorter relay of sophomore Sarah Ball, junior Melanie Taylor, junior Gabby Alphonse, and first-year Riley Friedman completed the race in 52.55 seconds. Friedman and Taylor joined juniors Arianna Holbrook and Julia Hluck for the longer relay that finished in 4:09.71.
CWRU track and field student-athletes will have three meets in May to improve their times or marks for qualification to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The first opportunity is on Saturday, May 3 at the WVU Invite in Morgantown, West Virginia.
