Case Western Reserve University senior right fielder Nick Harms slugged a pair of home runs to help lead the 23rd-ranked Spartans past 16th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University 8-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina.
CWRU got back to .500 for the season with the win, improving to 4-4 overall, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 4-3 with the loss.
Harms went two-for-five with two no-doubt home runs to right field, his first two of the campaign. He finished the game with two runs scored and five runs batted in. Graduate student catcher Jack Anderson added a two-for-three with a two-run home run, his first of the season, with a walk and a run scored.
Sophomore southpaw Quinn Saunders turned in his best start of the season, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts over four innings in a no-decision. After allowing an unearned run in the top of the third, Anderson gave the Spartans the lead back with a two-run blast in the bottom of the frame. The Yellow Jackets evened the score with a run in the top of the fourth, but another two-run home run in the bottom of the inning, this time off Harms' bat, put the Spartans in front for good.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Zach Barnes entered the game in the fifth and held the Yellow Jackets to just one run on two hits with four strikeouts in his three innings of work. Meanwhile, the Spartans added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run home run by Harms that expanded the lead to 7-2. CWRU added a run in the bottom of the eighth and first-year Oliver Miller closed out the game with a pair of scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out a pair.
Barnes picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-0 for the season. Baldwin Wallace starter Patrick Straub suffered the loss, dropping to 1-1 this year.
The Spartans will continue play at the Spartan Southern Classic on Monday at noon against Arcadia University.
