The Case Western Reserve University baseball team picked up a pair of wins at the Spartan Southern Classic on Tuesday, besting Arcadia University 10-6 in the early game before picking up an 11-9 win over Ithaca College in the nightcap in Lexington, South Carolina.
CWRU ran its winning streak to three games with the two victories, improving to 6-4 overall.
Game 1 - CWRU 10, Arcadia 6
The Spartans top five hitters combined for 15 of the team's 17 hits in the game, leading CWRU to a 10-6 win over Arcadia University in the team's first game of the day.
Sophomore third baseman Tyler Stillson and graduate student designated hitter Franco Alonso each collected four hits in the contest. Stillson went four-for-five with three RBIs and a run scored while Alonso also went four-for-five with two doubles, three RBIs, and a stolen base. Senior right fielder Nick Harms added a three-for-five showing at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
Also collecting multiple hits in the game were graduate student catcher Jack Anderson, who was two-for-four with three runs, an RBI, a walk, a triple, and a stolen base, and graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen, who was two-for-five with a double and two runs.
After Arcadia scored a run off CWRU junior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski in the first, the Spartans responded quickly in the bottom of the frame as Anderson drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Stillson. CWRU took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second, as senior left fielder Jay Smith plated a run with a groundout and Anderson and Stillson added run-scoring singles later in the inning.
Stankowski allowed just one more run in his outing, leaving the game after four innings with a 4-2 lead. He allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out five batters in the no-decision.
CWRU buffered its lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI groundout by Stillson. Arcadia scored two runs in the top of the sixth to pull back within a run, 5-4, but the Spartans had an answer again in the bottom of the inning with the first four batters reaching base, including an RBI double from Harms and a two-run double from Alonso, going ahead 8-4.
Arcadia trimmed the lead again with two runs in the top of the seventh, pulling within two, but CWRU got the runs back in the eighth on back-to-back RBI doubles from Harms and Alonso again to put the contest out of reach.
First-year southpaw Anton Sabo pitched two innings and allowed three runs on five hits with a strikeout to improve to 1-0 and claim the first win of his collegiate career. Junior righty Karthik Gondy worked around two walks in the seventh, allowing just one run and striking out a batter. First-year right-handed pitcher Cody Hughes walked one and struck out a batter without allowing a run or a hit in the eighth and Anderson closed out the game in a non-save situation with a scoreless ninth inning of work.
Arcadia reliever Sean Ahrens suffered the loss in the game, dropping to 0-1 on the season, as the Knights fell to 6-5 with the loss.
Game 2 - CWRU 11, Ithaca 9
Harms, Alonso, and Anderson all went deep for the Spartans in the second game of the day to lead CWRU to an 11-9 win over Ithaca.
Ithaca scored a run in the bottom of the second and held a 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth when the Spartans sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs to go in front. Camphausen started the inning with a walk, Stillson followed with a single, and Harms cleared the bases with a home run over the wall in right, his third in as many games. CWRU took advantage of two bases-loaded walks later in the inning to expand their lead to 5-1, but a three run home run in the bottom of the frame got Ithaca back within a run, 5-4, by the end of the fourth.
CWRU added a run when Harms scored from second on an error in the top of the fifth, but Ithaca responded with a four run bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 8-4. However, CWRU answered again in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on an errant throw on a pickoff attempt and adding a third on a solo home run by Alonso, his second of the year, giving the Spartans a 9-8 advantage.
Harms scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to push the team's lead to two runs, and Anderson connected on a solo home run in the ninth to extend the lead to 11-8. Anderson came on to pitch for the second time on Tuesday in the ninth inning, holding Ithaca to an unearned run and striking out two to pick up his third save of the year.
Harms finished the game three-for-four with four runs, three RBIs, and a home run. Stillson added a three-for-six showing at the plate with two runs, and Alonso went two-for-six with a home run.
First-year right-handed pitcher Ayush Shetty made his first career start and pitched effectively, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and six walks over three and two-thirds innings in the no-decision. First-year southpaw Jeff Radinsky followed and surrendered two runs over the next two thirds of an inning, before giving way to first-year lefty Charlie Griffith who pitched the next three and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts and earned the win to improve to 2-0 for the campaign.
Ithaca's Cooper Albert suffered the loss in relief, falling to 0-1, as Ithaca dropped to 6-3 with the loss.
The Spartans will continue play at the Spartan Southern Classic on Wednesday, facing Swarthmore College at 3:00 p.m. at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, South Carolina.
