Case Western Reserve University sophomore Tyler Stillson allowed one earned run over six innings and drove in the first run of the game to lead the Spartans to a 9-3 win over Swarthmore College at the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina on Wednesday.
The win was the fourth straight for the Spartans who improved to 7-4 overall on the season, while Swarthmore fell to 6-7 with the loss.
Stillson, who made his first appearance on the mound of the season, recorded the longest start both of his career and by a Spartan this season, pitching into the seventh inning and allowing three total runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts. He picked up the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. He added a one-for-five showing at the plate with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
CWRU fell behind 2-0 after half an inning but responded quickly with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. Stillson helped his own cause with a one-out double to drive in graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen and senior right fielder Nick Harms followed with a double of his own to drive in Stillson and knot the score at 2-2. With two outs in the inning and runners on second and third, junior catcher Sean Donahue singled up the middle to plate both runners and put the Spartans ahead 4-2. CWRU added another insurance run in the bottom of the third when Harms singled and took advantage of three wild pitches to score and push the team's lead to three runs.
Meanwhile, after allowing two hits in the first inning, Stillson allowed just two more hits through the sixth, holding the Garnet scoreless during the stretch. He began the seventh inning but issued a walk and gave up a hit, bringing the potential game-tying run to the plate. Graduate student Zack Carinci entered the game in relief and preserved the lead for the Spartans, allowing just one run to cross the plate in the frame.
CWRU added three runs with two outs in the seventh. Harms extended the inning by beating out a ground ball to short that scored the first run of the frame. Then, a wild pitch allowed Camphausen to score from third, and graduate student second baseman Franco Alonso plated a run to extend the lead to 8-3 by the end of the seventh. CWRU added another insurance run in the eighth when sophomore shortstop Nate Arterburn scored from third on a groundout by Camphausen.
Carinci was able to shut down the Swarthmore offense from there, holding the Garnet scoreless on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts over his three innings of work to close out the game and earn his first save of the season.
Harms finished the game three-for-four with a double, three runs, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Arterburn added a two-for-four day with a run and a double.
Swarthmore starter Joshua Rankey suffered the loss on Wednesday, falling to 0-1 on the season.
CWRU will conclude play at the Spartan Southern Classic on Thursday against Swarthmore with the first pitch scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
