CWRU Wraps-Up Play at Spartan Southern Classic with 5-3 Win over Swarthmore

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team wrapped up its time at the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina with a 5-3 win over Swarthmore College on Thursday.

CWRU won its last five games at the tournament, finishing the event 5-1 and improving to 8-4 overall. Swarthmore fell to 6-8 with the loss.

CWRU senior right-handed starter Jackson Brewer allowed three runs in the top of the first but settled in from there, holding the Garnet scoreless over the rest of his four-inning start. The Spartans got a run back in the top of the second when graduate student second baseman Franco Alonso led off the inning with a walk, moved to second base on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on an error. In the fourth, first-year third baseman Calvin Gelle drove in a run with his first collegiate hit to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs. Graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen led the inning off with a double and two batters later, senior right fielder Nick Harms plated a run with a double, tying the score at 3-3. Harms later scored a run of his own, crossing the plate on a wild pitch to give CWRU its first lead of the contest, 4-3.

Brewer gave way to first-year Eric Colgrove in the fifth and the right-handed pitcher went on to pitch a pair of scoreless innings, leaving the potential game-tying run stranded at second base each inning. Sophomore righty Zach Barnes followed out of the bullpen and pitched the final three innings, striking out five without allowing a hit or a run. Graduate student catcher Jack Anderson added a solo home run in the top of the eighth, his third of the season, pushing the Spartans' lead to two runs and helping to cement the victory.

The Spartans outhit Swarthmore 13-4 on Thursday. Anderson finished the game three-for-five with a solo home run, while Harms added a two-for-five effort with a double, a stolen base, a run, and an RBI. Senior left fielder Logan Andreyko finished the game two-for-three at the plate with a pair of walks.

Brewer allowed three runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in the no-decision. Colgrove earned the first win of his career, improving to 1-0, after holding Swarthmore scoreless on one hit and a walk with three strikeouts. Barnes earned his first save of the season with the three shutout innings.

Swarthmore's Ezra Schwartz suffered the loss, falling to 0-1 on the campaign.

The Spartans will begin their trip back north, making a stop in Marietta, Ohio for the Marietta/ BSN Sports Invitational this weekend. CWRU will face Wittenberg University at 11:00 a.m. on Friday before taking on Johnson & Wales University and host Marietta College on Saturday.
