The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams made the short trip to Berea, Ohio, on Saturday for the Dr. Taraschke Team Challenge hosted by Baldwin Wallace University at the Lou Higgins Recreation Center.
The Spartan men's team placed second out of five teams with 79 points, and the CWRU women's team placed third out of five teams with 73 points.
The distance medley relay of first-year Donovan Crowley, sophomore Praveen Sureshkumar, first-year Brendan Bradish, and senior Nate Gilbert set a meet record with the winning time of 10:36.88. The previous meet record of 10:52.33 was set by Otterbein in 2019.
First-year Marvin Sze was the runner-up in a pair of events, placing second in the 55-meter dash with a finals time of 6.64 seconds and finishing second in the 200-meter dash in 23.06 seconds.
The Spartans placed second and third in the 55-meter hurdles as junior Bryce Hodge earned the silver medal with a finals time of 8.04 seconds and junior Joshua Park took bronze in 8.08 seconds. Senior Quaylen Lamarre cleared 4.25 meters to place second in the pole vault, and graduate student Yusuf Shaaban added a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.15 seconds.
In the final track event of the day, the 4x400-meter relay of juniors Troy Olson and Aaron Brula, first-year Paxton Zelik, and senior Jack Xia finished second in 3:40.04. In the field, junior Connor Evans placed third in the triple jump by bounding 12.11 meters.
For the women's track and field team, graduate student Michaela Burkhauser won a pair of events. She placed first in the weight throw with a toss of 15.89 meters and was victorious in the shot put with a heave of 13.16 meters. Junior Michelle Lee earned second place in the weight throw with a mark of 15.65 meters.
Sophomore Holly Schreiber claimed the third individual event for the Spartans clearing 3.45 meters to win the pole vault. The distance medley relay of junior Arianna Holbrook and first-years Cecilia Postma, Julia Walko, and Becca Liaw won with a time of 13:27.54.
In the 400-meter dash, first-year Siena Kannenberg placed second in 1:03.32, and in the 800-meter run, junior Melanie Taylor was the runner-up with a time of 2:23.08. Kannenberg, Taylor, and Holbrook joined junior Grace Misiunas for the 4x400-meter relay, placing third with a time of 4:13.08.
Senior Jordan Su and sophomore Sarah Ball also placed third in individual events. Su leaped 4.90 meters in the long jump, the third-best mark at the competition, and Ball was third to cross the line in the finals of the 55-meter hurdles in 8.79 seconds.
The Spartan track and field teams will next travel to Granville, Ohio, for the Bob Shannon Invitational, hosted by Denison University on Saturday, February 8.
