CWRU Tops Host Waynesburg 89-61 at Omni Ink Tip-Off Tournament

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team never trailed on Friday night, winning its third-straight game to open the campaign with an 89-61 victory over Waynesburg University at the Omni Ink Tip-Off Tournament in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.

The Spartans improved to 3-0 on the season with the win and will face Mount Union (3-0) in the tournament championship game on Saturday. The loss was the Yellow Jackets' first of the season, as the team fell to 3-1 on the campaign.

Stats and Standouts


  • The Spartans scored the first basket of the game 24 seconds into the game and led the rest of the way, pushing the gap to as many as 42 points in the game.

  • CWRU shot 47.8% (32-67) from the floor, including 40.0% (14-35) on three-point attempts.

  • Sophomore guard Matthew Ellis scored 15 of his team-high 19 points in the first half and finished the contest shooting seven-of-12 from the floor.

  • First-year guard Shyam Patel came off the bench and scored all 16 of his points in the first half. He made his first five three-point attempts of the night and finished the contest shooting five-of-eight overall and five-of-seven from behind the three-point line with a team-high three steals.

  • Senior guard Anand Dharmarajan made four-of-seven three-point attempts and finished the game with 12 points.

  • Junior guard Julian Scott finished just shy of a triple-double, registering nine points, eight assists, and 10 rebounds with three steals.

First Half


  • Ellis opened the game with a jumper, and Dharmarajan added a three to give CWRU a 5-0 lead less than a minute into the game.

  • Ellis scored nine of the team's first 12 points, spurring a 14-0 lead that put the Spartans in front 21-5 with 15:02 left in the first half.

  • A three-pointer by first-year guard Anestis Hajistamoulou converted a four-point play with 11:51 to play, hitting a three and converting the resulting foul shot to put CWRU ahead 28-7.

  • Senior forward Andrew Fox made a layup to cap off an 18-3 CWRU run with 4:42 to play in the half and put the Spartans ahead 46-13.

  • CWRU led by as many as 35 points in the first half and closed out the period with a 54-21 lead.

  • The Spartans shot 63.3% (19-30) from the floor and 55.6% (10-18) from three-point range over the first 20 minutes.

Second Half


  • Six points from Andrew Fox helped the Spartans open up the second half on an 11-2 run and take a game-high 42-point lead, 65-23, with 17:22 to play. 

  • A 12-0 run by the Yellow Jackets trimmed the Spartans' lead below 30 points, 70-43, with 10:39 left in the game, but CWRU never led by less than 24 points for the rest of the game, and closed out a 28-point victory.

Spartan Notes


  • Friday's game was just the second meeting all-time between CWRU and Waynesburg and the first meeting since the 2011-12 season, when the Spartans claimed a 69-51 win over the Yellow Jackets.

  • The Spartans finished the game with a 20-0 edge in fast break points.

  • CWRU outrebounded Waynesburg 47-37 on Friday. It was the third time through as many games this season that the Spartans have finished with a +10 or greater rebound margin in a game.

The Spartans will face Mount Union in the championship game of the Omni Ink Waynesburg Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Waynesburg.
