Men’s Basketball Falls to Mount Union for First Loss of 2025-26

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team dropped its first game of the 2025-26 season, falling to the University of Mount Union 82-72 in the championship game of the Omni Ink Waynesburg Tip-Off Tournament in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans fell to 3-1 overall with the loss, while Mount Union, which received votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, improved to 4-0.

Stats and Standouts


  • Making the first start of his collegiate career, first-year forward Alex Vincent led all CWRU players with 14 points and nine rebounds in the game. He finished the game shooting six-of-nine from the floor.

  • Senior forward Andrew Fox finished the game with 12 points and matched Vincent's nine boards. Fox also led the team with four blocks.

  • First-year guard Anestis Hajistamoulou came off the bench to score 13 points.

  • Also in double figures on Saturday was first-year guard Shyam Patel, who scored 10 points during the contest.

  • CWRU finished the game shooting 43.8% (28-64) and 35.0% (7-20) from three-point range.

First Half


  • The Spartans held a lead through the first 16 minutes of the game, going ahead by nine points, 18-9, after a three by Hajistamoulou with 14:06 to play in the period.

  • The Purple Raiders tied the game at 32-32 with 3:52 to play in the first half, and took their first lead, 35-34, with 3:22 to go in the frame, before closing out the period with a four-point lead, 42-38.

  • Hadjistamoulou led all CWRU players with nine points over the first 20 minutes, while Fox, senior guard Anand Dharmarajan, and Patel all scored seven points during the first half.

Second Half


  • The Spartans never led in the second half but remained close for most of the period.

  • Back-to-back baskets from Vincent helped CWRU cut the lead to two points, 54-52, with 14:27 left in the game, but Mount Union answered with a 13-2 run to take a 67-54 lead with 10:40 to play.

  • Trailing 71-60 with 8:03 to play in the game, the Spartans launched on a 9-0 run to trim the Mount Union advantage back to two points with 4:50 to play, with baskets from Vincent, Hadjistamoulou, Patel, and first-year forward Will Taylor.

  • However, the Purple Raiders scored the next six points to go ahead by eight with 3:17 left. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Matthew Ellis made it 77-72 with 1:13 left, but Mount Union scored the final five points of the game to pull away late.

Spartan Notes


  • Saturday's game was the first meeting between the Spartans and the Purple Raiders since the 2003-04 season. CWRU fell to 0-7 all-time against Mount Union.

  • Vincent leads all Spartans with 12.0 points per game this season. Other Spartans averaging double-figures through the first four games of the year include Patel (11.3), Ellis (11.0), and Dharamarajan (10.8).

  • CWRU's bench outscored Mount Union's by a 28-13 margin.

The Spartans will head to Washington, Pennsylvania, next weekend for the 2025 Great Lakes Invitational, hosted by Washington & Jefferson College. The Spartans will face the hosts in their first game of the tournament on Friday, November 21, at 7:30 p.m.
