Track and Field Teams Sweep Fighting Scots Invite

Women’s 4x200-meter relay sets school record

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams swept the Fighting Scots Invitational on Saturday at the Scot Field House in Wooster, Ohio. Both Spartan teams placed first out of six teams with the CWRU women's team scoring 194 points and the CWRU men's team scoring 184 points.

The 4x200-meter relay of sophomore Sarah Ball, junior Melanie Taylor, and first-years Siena Kannenberg and Riley Friedman broke the school record in the event with a time of 1:49.14. The quartet, which placed third in the race, bested the previous record of 1:49.22 set by Julie Hines, Bari Love, Ana Scherf, and Olivia Newman in 2019.

Ball and Kannenberg placed 1-2 in the 60-meter dash with Ball winning in 8.20 seconds and Kannenberg finishing second in 8.58 seconds. Friedman and Taylor both added individual silver medals with the first-year sprinter placing second in the 200-meter dash in 27.32 seconds and the junior finishing second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.83. Taylor joined with junior Arianna Holbrook and first-years Emi Ellis and Eyoha Teshome to take second in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:24.91.

Holbrook won the mile run in 5:25.14 finishing in front of junior teammate Julia Hluck, who placed third in 5:30.93. In the field, Teshome won the high jump by clearing 1.51 meters.

Also claiming events in the field were sophomore Holly Schreiber (pole vault, 3.35 meters), senior Lauren Roskuszka (weight throw, 15.06 meters), and senior Jordan Su (triple jump, 10.05 meters). The Spartans swept the podium in the weight throw with graduate students Michaela Burkhauser and Ailean Duffie finishing second and third, respectively, with heaves of 14.45 meters and 14.30 meters. Burkhauser also placed third in the shot put with a toss of 11.39 meters.

Junior Lauren Iagnemma crossed the line first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:13.42. Just behind her was junior teammate Ashley Novak, who was the runner-up in 10:44.99.

For the men's team, junior Connor Evans placed in the top three in three different events. He was the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.07 seconds, third in the triple jump with a mark of 12.25 meters, and third in the long jump with a leap of 6.25 meters. First-year Tanush Anand won the triple jump by bounding 13.66 meters and finished third in the high jump by clearing 1.90 meters. In a pair of sprinting events, first-year Marvin Sze recorded top three finishes, placing second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.52 seconds and third in the 60-meter dash in 7.22 seconds.

CWRU swept the podium in the pole vault with senior Quaylen Lamarre taking first after clearing 4.10 meters, senior Joshua Berman placing second after by clearing 3.95 meters, and first-year David Goldstein placing third by clearing 3.95 meters in one more attempt.

In distance events, senior Mike Lombardi was the first to cross the finish line in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:47.74. First-year Lucas Siepser placed third in the 3,000-meter run in 9:13.62.

Rounding out the individual podium finishes, graduate student Yusuf Shaaban was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.18 seconds, senior Utah Strobel took third in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.27 seconds, and senior Kwabena Agyemang placed third in the weight throw with a heave of 13.98 meters.

Finally, the men's 4x400-meter relay of senior Nicolas Lende, junior Aaron Brula, sophomore Praveen Sureshkumar, and junior Josh Bates finished second with a time of 3:42.35.

The Spartans will make the short trip to Berea, Ohio, next Saturday for the Dr. Taraschke Team Challenge, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University on February 1. Action is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
