Box Score The fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team defeated 27th-ranked Babson College 7-0 on Saturday morning to place third at the Stag-Hen Invitational in Claremont, California.
The third-place finish was the team's best-ever finish at the event. CWRU completed a 2-1 run at the Stag-Hen with Saturday's win and improved to 14-4 overall. Babson dropped to 4-7 with the loss.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the match, taking the doubles point with a sweep of all three contests. Senior Vishwa Aduru and graduate student Diego Maza bested Andrew Watson and Brady Anderson at first doubles, senior Sahil Dayal and sophomore Anmay Devaraj defeated Caymus Choi and Ole Lepsoe 7-5 at second doubles, and seniors Yuvraj Narang and Daniel French secured a 6-2 win over Dae-Hyun Back and Kerem Ozlale at third doubles.
CWRU's strong play continued into singles play where the team went on to win all six contests. After a tightly played first set at no. 1 singles, Aduru was able to pull out a straight-set win over Anderson, 7-6 (2), 6-1. Moving up a spot in the lineup, junior Ajay Mahenthiran claimed a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Choi at second singles to improve to a team-best 11-1 in the spring, and graduate student Michael Sutanto picked up a 6-0, 7-6 (2) win against Jose Gonzalez in the third singles match. At no. 4 singles, junior Casey Hishinuma claimed a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Back, and Maza bested Brandon Reznik 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles. Rounding out the win, Devaraj topped Martin Mejia 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.
Saturday's win wraps up the Spartans' spring break trip to California. CWRU will be back in action with a pair of matches on Friday, March 29 in Lima, Ohio, facing Northwestern Ohio at 9:00 a.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. match against Wayne State.
