No. 4 Spartans Split on First Day at the Stag-Hen Invitational

The fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team split a pair of matches during its first day of competition at the Stag-Hen Invitational in Claremont, California, defeating 17th-ranked Southwestern University 7-0 in the quarterfinals before falling to sixth-ranked Bowdoin College 6-1 in the semifinals on Friday.

The Spartans now stand at 13-4 on the season following the split.

With the matches at the Stag-Hen being played under DI scoring rules, CWRU swept the three doubles matches to earn the point in their opening match of the day against Southwestern. Seniors Daniel French and Yuvraj Narang defeated Sebastian Herrera and Landon Sosebee 6-1 at third doubles and sophomore Anmay Devaraj and senior Sahil Dayal secured a 6-2 win at no. 2 doubles against Travis Rafferty and Bernardo Clemente to clinch the doubles point for CWRU. Senior Vishwa Aduru and graduate student Diego Maza added a 6-3 win against Ashton Ellis and Oscar Roy at no. 1 doubles after the doubles point had already been decided.

The Spartans went on to sweep the six singles matches as well. Junior Ansh Shah was the first to finish, besting Clemente 6-1, 6-0 at third singles, and junior Ajay Mahenthiran followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ellis at second singles to put CWRU ahead 3-0. Junior Casey Hishinuma went on to provide the clincher with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Joseph Snyman at fourth singles.

Adding singles wins against the Pirates were graduate student Michael Sutanto (6-2, 4-6, 11-9 against Roy at no. 1 singles), Maza (6-4, 6-1 against Rafferty at no. 5 singles), and Devaraj (6-2, 6-2 over Ryan Flanagan at no. 6 singles).

Southwestern dropped to 6-3 with the loss.

CWRU struggled early in their late match against Bowdoin, dropping all three doubles contests. Aduru and Maza fell 6-3 to Tristan Bradley and Reid Staples in the first doubles match, Devaraj and Dayal lost 6-1 at second doubles to Ethan Bradley and Pieter Brueker, and French and Narang suffered a 6-3 setback at third doubles to Jackson Codd and Jack Flores.

Bowdoin quickly extended its lead to 3-0 as Tristan Bradley bested Aduru 6-2, 6-0 at no. 1 singles and Sutanto fell to Staples at second singles, 6-2, 6-3. Mahenthiran got the Spartans on the board at third singles, winning by retirement after splitting the first two sets with Brueker 5-7, 6-1. However, Andrew Mendelson clinched the match for the Polar Bears with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Maza at sixth singles.

After the match had been decided, Hishinuma fell in three sets to Ethan Bradley, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-6, at fifth singles, and Shah fell to Mark Kneiss at fourth singles 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.

The Spartans will conclude their Spring Break trip with the third-place match at the Stag-Hen on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
