Box Score 2 The fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team picked up two more wins on Monday afternoon in Claremont, California, defeating Hardin-Simmons University 9-0 and 11th-ranked Sewanee 8-1.
CWRU saw its record climb to 10-1 for the season following the two victories.
The Spartans opened the day against Hardin-Simmons with a sweep of the doubles contests. Sophomore Anmay Devaraj and George Kosseifi were the first to finish, winning 8-4 at no. 3 doubles against Brandon Curiel and Jordan Oberbillig. Seniors Daniel French and Yuvraj Narang followed with an 8-5 triumph over Zach Fowler and Payne Smith at second doubles, and senior Vishwa Aduru and graduate student Diego Maza bested Luke Cantu and Justus Petersilie 8-4 at first doubles.
Kosseifi went on to defeat Oberbillig 6-1, 6-1 in the sixth singles match to increase the team's lead to 4-0, and junior Ansh Shah clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles over Cantu. Other wins in the opening match of the day came from junior Ajay Mahenthiran (6-0, 6-2 over Justus Petersilie at no. 1 singles), Devaraj (6-1, 6-0 over Fowler at no. 3 singles), junior Casey Hishinuma (6-4, 6-2 over Smith at no. 4 singles), and sophomore Matthew Plunkett (6-3, 6-2 over Curiel).
Hardin-Simmons fell to 2-6 with the loss.
In the late contest against Sewanee, senior Sahil Dayal and Deveraj got the Spartans on the board with an 8-4 win over Peyton Erck and Andre Jakobi at second doubles, while Aduru and Maza added to the lead with an 8-5 win over Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund (ranked first in Division III) at first doubles. French and Narang completed the doubles sweep by pulling out an 8-7 (5) win over Gil Weston and Talman Ramsey in the third doubles match.
In singles play, Maza put the Spartans a point away from clinching with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Henry Hyden at sixth singles. Finishing in close succession, Mahenthiran defeated Ramsey 6-3, 6-2 at third singles and Shah topped Wicklund 6-4, 6-2 at fourth singles to secure the team win for CWRU.
Sewanee registered its first point of the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win from Erck over graduate student Michael Sutanto at second singles, but Hishinuma followed with a 6-2, 7-6 win at fifth singles against Weston. Rounding out the day, Aduru pulled out a thriller against Theron (who entered the day as the top-ranked singles player in Division III) at no. 1 singles, coming from behind to win 2-6, 7-6 (5), 11-9.
Sewanee fell to 5-3 on the season with the loss.
The Spartans will continue play in California on Tuesday with matches against Westcliff University at 3:00 p.m. ET and UC Irvine at 6:00 p.m.
