Box Score 2 The fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team began its spring break trip to California with a pair of wins over ranked California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) squads on Sunday afternoon, defeating second-ranked Ventura College 9-0 and sixth-ranked Bakersfield College 8-1 in Claremont.
The Spartans improved to 8-1 overall for the season with the two victories.
In the match against Venture CWRU swept all three matches during doubles play to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Senior Vishwa Aduru and graduate student Diego Maza bested Cody Ray Emery and Rafael Matias 8-1 at no. 1 doubles, seniors Daniel French and Yuvraj Narang defeated Edgar Ploquin and Julian Tellez 8-1 at no. 2 doubles, and senior Sahil Dayal and graduate student Michael Sutanto claimed an 8-4 win over Robinson Pelluault and Cooper Rowlands at no. 3 doubles.
The Spartans went on to claim straight-set victories in each of the six singles matches as well. Sutanto was the first to finish, extending CWRU's lead to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Matias at no. 2 singles, and junior Ansh Shah provided the clincher with a 6-1, 6-0 win at no. 4 singles against Pelluault. Other Spartans to claim singles wins against Ventura included Aduru (6-4, 6-2 against Emery at no. 1 singles), junior Ajay Mahenthiran (6-1, 6-4 against Tellez at no. 3 singles), junior Casey Hishinuma (6-3, 6-1 against Ploquin at no. 5 singles), and Maza (6-1, 6-0 against Rowlands at no. 6 singles).
Ventura fell to 7-5 with the loss.
While half of the squad was facing Ventura, the other half took on Bakersfield at the same time. CWRU fell behind early with Chin-Chang Wu and Brett Yackovich claiming an 8-4 win over first-year Trey Lambright and sophomore Matthew Plunkett and no. 2 doubles, but the Spartans battled back to win the final two doubles contests, with sophomore Anmay Devaraj and first-year George Kosseifi beating Sebastian Junghanns and Filip Novacek 8-5 at no. 1 doubles and first-year Santiago Salazar Garza and sophomore Rohan Bhat topping Niteesh Kuchakulla and Will LaClare 8-0 at no. 3 doubles.
First-year Derek Shiffer was the first to finish in singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Wu in the fourth match, and sophomore Justin Prochnow extended the team's lead to 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over LaClare in the fifth match. The clinching victory came from Kosseifi in the second match with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Novacek.
Adding singles wins on Sunday against Bakersfield were Plunkett (6-3, 6-4 against Junghanns at no. 1 singles), Bhat (6-1, 6-4 against Yackovich at no. 3 singles), and junior Ben Martin (6-1, 6-1 against Kuchakulla at no. 6 singles).
Bakersfield dropped to 5-6 with the loss.
CWRU will continue its California trip tomorrow with two more matches, facing Hardin-Simmons at 1:00 p.m. ET and 11th-ranked Sewanee at 6:00 p.m. ET in Claremont.
