Case Western Reserve University junior diver Abigail Wilkov set two school records for the 13th-ranked Spartan women's swimming and diving team at the Steen Aquatic Center in Gambier, Ohio, on Saturday. However, CWRU was swept in a dual meet by host Kenyon College with the women's team losing to the second-ranked Owls 228-108 and the 15th-ranked men's team falling to top-ranked Kenyon 206.5-111.5.
Wilkov won all four of the diving events at the meet and became the first diver in program history to break 500.0 points in the 11-dive versions of each event. She also set pool records in both the 11-dive versions of the 1-meter and 3-meter dives and the six-dive version of the 3-meter dive.
On the 3-meter board, she scored 552.70 in 11 dives to best her previous program record of 459.65 set in 2021. The previous pool record of 551.60 was set by Kenyon's Maria Zarka in 2015. In six dives, Wilkov totaled 337.40. On the 1-meter board, Wilkov scored 509.25 in 11 dives to better her program record of 477.15 from 2021. Zarka also previously held the pool record in the 1-meter dive with a score of 484.35 in December 2015. In six dives, Wilkov scored 313.35.
Including Wilkov's four event victories, CWRU won nine events during the dual meet and added 13 second place finishes. Both Spartan teams ended the season with a 5-1 record in dual meets. The Owl men's team improved to 5-2 overall, and the Kenyon women's team improved to 4-3 on the season.
Sophomore Claire Kozma placed first in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:04.49. Junior Gabriella Chambers added runner-up finishes in the 50 Free in 24.01 seconds and 100 Free in 52.01 seconds. They were joined by junior Kelly Vann and sophomore Eliza Dixon for the 200 Free Relay which placed second in 1:36.32.
Junior Amelia Myhrvold was the second swimmer to touch the wall in the 100 Back, completing the race in 59.29 seconds. Also placing second in an event was first-year Ava Ellis, who was the runner-up in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:32.45.
On the diving boards, senior Rei Miyauchi finished second in the six dive versions of both events, scoring 276.70 on the 1-meter board and 311.75 on the 3-meter board.
For the men's team, the 200 Free Relay of sophomores Emil LaSida, Ben Borvendeg, and Mason Bencurik, and junior Jackson Pollard placed first in 1:23.49. Individually, LaSida added a runner-up finish in the 100 Back in 49.58 seconds.
The Spartans took the top two spots in both the 200 Fly and 500 Free. In the butterfly event, sophomore Adam Khatib finished first in 1:53.57, and sophomore John Drumm touched the wall only 0.36 seconds after him. For the distance freestyle event, junior Peter Meng took first with a time of 4:33.80, and junior Stephen Hogeman placed second in 4:42.92.
Sophomore William Froass earned a victory in the 100 Fly placing first with a time of 50.57 seconds. Sophomore Tyler Ahten contributed a runner-up finish in the 200 Back in 1:54.44.
On the diving boards, junior Alex Waltman placed second in the six dive versions of both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. He scored 311.16 on the 1-meter board and 262.25 on the 3-meter board, earning qualification to the NCAA Regional Diving Zone Meet later in the year.
The Spartans ended the meet with a win in the Mixed 200 Medley Relay. Senior Ethan Chuang (breaststroke) joined LaSida (backstroke), Kozma (butterfly), and Chambers (freestyle) to finish the race in 1:37.06 and beat the Owls by 0.82 seconds.
The Case Western Reserve swimming and diving teams will spend the next week preparing for the 2024 University Athletic Association Championships which will be hosted by the University of Chicago from February 14-17 at the Ratner Athletic Center in Chicago.
