Box Score The top-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team returned to its dominating form on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over fifth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to secure a third-place finish at the 2024 ITA Indoor National Championship at the Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
The Spartans went 2-1 during the tournament to improve to 6-1 overall in 2024. The third-place finish marked the team's third-ever top-three finish at the event. The Stags fell to 4-3 with the loss.
CWRU was able to claim the doubles point when sophomore Anmay Devaraj and senior Sahil Dayal broke a 1-1 tie in doubles play with a 6-4 win over Matthew Robinson and Ian Freer at no. 1 doubles. Earlier in doubles play, senior Vishwa Aduru and graduate student Diego Maza got the Spartans on the board with a 6-2 win over Advik Mareedu and Warren Pham at no. 2 doubles, before Claremont-Mudd-Scripps evened the match with a 6-4 win at no. 3 doubles from Tarm Rojanasoonthon and Josh Kim over graduate student Michael Sutanto and junior Ansh Shah.
Leading 1-0 heading into singles play, the Spartans needed to win three of the six singles matches to secure the team victory. The middle of the lineup was able to provide the team with just that, as junior Ajay Mahenthiran bested Robinson 6-2, 6-2 in the third singles match, junior Casey Hishinuma defeated Pham 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth singles match, and Maza triumphed over Anirudh Gupta 6-2, 6-4 in the fifth singles match.
When play was stopped due to decision, Aduru led Mareedu by a set at no. 1 singles, 6-4, 4-3, while Sutanto trailed Freer 2-6, 3-5 at no. 2 singles, and Devaraj was behind Anirudh Reddy 2-6, 4-3 at no. 6 singles.
CWRU will now be off until their spring break trip when the squad will head to California for a stretch of 11 matches in seven days, starting on March 10th against Bakersfield College and Ventura College.
