Box Score 2 The top-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team was flawless on Saturday, claiming 9-0 victories over Oberlin College and the Illinois Institute of Technology in Oberlin, Ohio.
CWRU now stands at 4-0 on the season with the two wins. A third match on Saturday originally scheduled against 23rd-ranked Kenyon was canceled due to poor weather conditions in Central Ohio that prevented the Owls from making the trip to Cleveland.
The Spartans opened play on Saturday against Oberlin. At no. 1 doubles, sophomore Anmay Devaraj and senior Sahil Dayal bested Sabastien Naginski and Shawn Lisann 8-6, while senior Vishwa Aduru and graduate student Diego Maza defeated Rohan Gold and Zain Makada 8-1 at no. 2 doubles, and junior Ansh Shah and graduate student Michael Sutanto claimed an 8-0 win over Benjamin Tichauer and James Foster at no. 3 doubles.
In singles play, sophomore Matthew Plunkett earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gold at no. 1 singles and first-year George Kosseifi defeated Lisann 6-1, 6-1 at no. 2 singles. In the third singles match, first-year Santiago Salazar Garza claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Naginski, and sophomore Rohan Bhat bested Makada 7-5, 6-2 in the fourth singles contest. Rounding out the sweep, junior Ben Martin defeated Tichauer 6-2, 6-2 at no. 5 singles and first-year Derek Shiffer came out on top against Foster at no. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Oberlin fell to 1-3 with the loss.
CWRU continued to roll with another doubles sweep against Illinois Tech in its late match. Dayal and Deveraj claimed an 8-2 win over Alann Torres and Avneet Singh 8-2 at no. 1 doubles, Shah and Sutanto edged out Jordan Lauer and Davis Housman 8-7 (3) at no. 2 doubles, and Bhat and Kosseifi won the third doubles match 8-0 over Pol Dueso Guell and Nabil Fawaz.
In singles action, Plunkett claimed another win in the first match, defeating Housman 6-1, 6-0. Kosseifi added a 6-3 6-0 win against Torres in the second singles match and Salazar Garza notched a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Fawaz at no. 3 singles. In the fourth singles match, Bhat defeated Dueso Guell 6-1, 6-4, and first-year Trey Lambright bested Eduardo Lopez 6-0, 7-6 (5) at no. 5 singles. Shiffer completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Lauer at sixth singles.
The setback dropped Illinois Tech to 2-3 for the season.
The Spartans will now turn their attention toward one of their early season tests, the 2024 ITA National Indoor Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky, where CWRU will be aiming to win their third-consecutive title. The Spartans will open play at the event against the eighth-ranked University of Chicago on Friday, February 23 at 9:00 a.m.
