Both the Case Western Reserve University men's and CWRU women's swimming and diving teams set school records in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Wednesday, the first day of the 2024 University Athletic Association Championships hosted by the University of Chicago at the Myers-McLoraine Pool inside the Ratner Athletic Center in Chicago.
For the women's team, the relay of sophomore Claire Kozma, juniors Angeli Paull and Gabriella Chambers, and first-year Maggie Rose Rook beat their own school record with a time of 7:30.98, placing fourth in the event. The previous record was 7:35.52 set at the Total Performance Invitational last fall. The time was also the first NCAA B cut of the meet for the Spartans.
To finish the night, sophomores John Drumm and Mason Bencurik and juniors Peter Meng and Stephen Hogeman swam a school record time of 6:42.10, besting the previous mark of 6:42.43 set by former Spartans Drew Hamilton, Aaron Tam, Oliver Hudgins, and Andrew Henning at the 2016 NCAA Championships. The relay, which also recorded an NCAA B cut time, placed sixth in the event.
To start the day, four Spartans competed in the 1-meter dive, with juniors Abigail Wilkov and Jocelyn Schechter reaching the final. In the preliminary round, Wilkov had the fourth-highest score (433.60), and Schechter had the eighth-best score (404.05). Senior Rei Miyauchi placed 12th with a score of 382.75, and senior Elena Igic placed 21st with a score of 331.20.
Wilkov placed fifth in the final by scoring 415.35, and Schechter finished seventh by scoring 403.05.
The UAA Championships continue Thursday with the 200 Free Relay, 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, 400 Medley Relay, and men's 3-meter dive. Swimming prelims will start at 11 a.m. ET with finals scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, and diving prelims will begin at 1:45 p.m. ET with finals scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.Â
