Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Nov. 25: John Drumm & Claire Kozma

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University junior John Drumm, a member of the men's swimming and diving team, and junior Claire Kozma, a member of the women's swimming and diving team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Drumm set five school records, recorded three NCAA B cut times, and swam four times in the top 10 in Division III at the Total Performance Invitational hosted by Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, last week. Drumm's best performance was in the final of the 200 Fly when he set school, pool, and meet records with a time of 1:46.36 that currently ranks second in the county. He broke a 10-year school record in the 500 Free with a time of 4:28.20, placing him third in Division III in the event. He also tied the school record in the 100 Fly with a time of 49.04 seconds that ranks 17th in D3. Drumm set program records on two relays, swimming school-best times in the 800 Free Relay (6:41.58) and 400 Free Relay (3:01.16). The times rank fifth and seventh, respectively, in the country. Overall, CWRU placed fifth out of eight teams at the meet with 1,010.5 points.

Kozma set two school records, recorded six NCAA B cut times, and swam five times in the top 10 of Division III at the Total Performance Invitational last week. Individually, Kozma set a school record and had a B cut in the 100 Fly with a time of 54.97 seconds, the fourth-fastest mark in D3 this season. She also had a B cut time in the 50 Free in 23.57 seconds, ranking 20th in the country. All four relays Kozma participated in recorded B cut times that ranked in the top 10 in Division III. The 800 Free Relay swam a time of 7:37.17 that ranks fifth, the 400 Free Relay had a time of 3:27.70 that ranks sixth, the 400 Medley Relay set a school record in 3:49.19 to rank eighth, and the 200 Free Relay ranks ninth with a time of 1:34.23. CWRU placed fourth out of eight teams at the meet with 1,049.5 points.

With the fall portion of their seasons complete, the CWRU swimming and diving teams will next host SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mentions:

Junior Lauren Iagnemma (women's cross country) earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season at the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championship on Saturday morning at the Laverne Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana. Iagnemma placed 36th out of 290 total runners at the meet to claim All-America acclaim. She crossed the finish line of the 6K race in a time of 21:43.6, her second-fastest time of the season. She became the third Spartan to earn multiple All-America honors for the program over a career. 

This was the 21st consecutive year that the Spartans have been represented by at least one individual at the NCAA Championship. Saturday's meet concluded the 2024 season for the CWRU cross country teams.

Senior Aidan Nathan (men's cross country) placed 102nd out of 294 total runners at the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship on Saturday afternoon in Terre Haute, Indiana. Nathan crossed the line of the 8K course with a time of 25:13.0, his fourth-fastest mark of the campaign. It marked the best finish for Nathan in his three career trips to the NCAA Championship meet after placing 217th as a first-year runner in 2021 and 262nd as a sophomore in 2022. 

Junior Art Martinez (wrestling) placed second with three pins in the 133-pound bracket at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational in Berea, Ohio, on Saturday. Martinez won his first three matches by fall to reach the semifinal round of the bracket, beating Kolton Ploughe in 1:42, Joseph Slatzer in 2:15, and Ben Edwards in 3:15. In the semifinal, he prevailed by decision 8-7 over Nick Rodriguez, winning with an escape with 1:09 left in the match. In the final, Martinez faced Treygen Morin from Division II West Liberty and lost by major decision. This season, Martinez has a 14-3 record with five pins and two technical falls. CWRU placed fourth out of 12 teams at the invite with 126.5 points.

The Spartans will conclude the fall portion of their schedule with the RIT Invite on Saturday, December 7 in Rochester, New York.

Senior diver Abigail Wilkov (women's swimming and diving) swept the boards and set a pool record at the CMU Invite hosted by Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh on Friday and Saturday. In the 3-meter dive, Wilkov had a pool record score of 503.93 on Friday night. On Saturday morning, she posted a score of 483.92 in the 1-meter dive to win the event. Wilkov qualified for the 2025 NCAA Regional Championship in March with two scores. 

Senior diver Nico Billoni (men's swimming and diving) placed in the top three on both boards at the CMU Invite in Pittsburgh. Billoni won the 3-meter dive on Saturday morning with a regional-qualifying score of 466.35. On Friday night, he placed third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 422.48. 

Sophomore guard Mya Hartjes (women's basketball) led the Spartans to a 1-1 record over two games last week. Hartjes led all Spartan players with 14.0 points and 3.5 assists during the weekend while adding 6.5 rebounds per game. She shot 47.4% from the floor (9-of-19), 45.5% from three-point range (5-of-11), and 83.3% from the free throw line (5-of-6). In a 51-40 loss to Capital on Wednesday night, Hartjes recorded career-highs with 18 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 46.2% overall (6-of-13), 57.1% from three-point range (4-of-7), and made both of her free throw attempts. During Saturday's 90-46 win at the Pitt.-Greensburg, she scored 10 points on three-of-six shooting overall, including one-of-four from three-point range and three-of-four from the charity stripe, while collecting a career-high matching seven assists, two rebounds, and a steal. Through five games this season, Hartjes has averaged 12.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. The Spartans stand at 2-3 overall this season.

The Spartans will be back in action on Tuesday when the team travels to Alliance, Ohio, to face the University of Mount Union at 7 p.m.

Junior middle blocker Amanda Ngo (volleyball) matched a program postseason record in five sets on Thursday against Dubuque at the DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland, Michigan. Ngo put down 19 kills in the match, tying a postseason record set by Rachel Suchy and Tricia McCutchan in the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament match in 2015. Ngo, who had a .371 attacking percentage, added a team-high nine total blocks in the contest. An All-University Athletic Association First Team honoree, she finished the season with 290 kills, 108.0 blocks, and 352.0 points in 112 sets. CWRU finished the season with an overall record of 24-8. 

Senior guard Sam Trunley (men's basketball) notched his second double-double of the season during the Spartans' 105-93 loss at Bethany College on Thursday evening. Trunley finished the game with 30 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 11-of-21 from the floor, five-of-12 from behind the three-point line, and three-of-four from the charity stripe. He added six assists and two steals with just one turnover during the game. Through five games this year, Trunley is averaging 27.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest with 2.8 assists and 2.0 steals. The Spartans stand at 3-2 overall in 2024-25.

The Spartans will be off through Thanksgiving, returning to action on Wednesday, December 4 on the road against Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
