The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University sophomore Carter Shedd, a goalkeeper on the men's soccer team, and sophomore Gabby Lee, a member of the women's tennis team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Shedd recorded a pair of shutouts to help the second-ranked Spartans stay unbeaten in 2026. On Wednesday night at home, Shedd made a pair of saves and kept John Carroll off the board in a scoreless tie. Later in the week, the sophomore goalkeeper saved three shots and did not allow a goal in a 2-0 road victory over Trine. Shedd faced 19 shots across the two games. This season, he has allowed just three goals in nine starts for a goals against average of 0.35, recording three shutouts. The Spartans have shut out six of their past seven opponents. CWRU will enter conference play undefeated for the second consecutive season, posting an 8-0-1 record in non-league play.
CWRU will begin its conference schedule with a trip to Rochester, New York, on Saturday, October 3 to face the University of Rochester at 5 p.m.
Lee advanced to the semifinal round of the 2026 ITA Division III Central Region Championship over the weekend on the campus of Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Paired with first-year Shayli Dodia, the partnership made the furthest run by a Spartan duo at the tournament since 2023. The pairing, seeded ninth in the draw, defeated Anneka Croftchik and Hye Jin Elliot of Adrian 8-0 in the round of 32 on Friday. The following day, Lee and Dodia upset fourth-seeded Anika Paul and Lily Zawaneh 8-7 (7-5) from Chicago in the round of 16. The Spartans followed the result with a quarterfinal upset of WashU's fifth-seeded partnership of Samantha Slowik and Cassandra Li, 8-7 (8-6). On Sunday, the pairing's run ended in the semifinals with a 2-6, 5-7 loss to the top-seeded eventual champions. Lee also competed in the singles draw at the championship, advancing to the round of 32 with a first round victory. She ended the fall season with a singles record of 4-3 and a doubles mark of 6-5, including a 5-3 record with Dodia.
With the fall season complete, the Spartans will next face intercollegiate competition in the spring semester. The season is tentatively scheduled to start on Saturday, February 13, 2027, with a home matchup against Wilmington College.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mentions
First-year midfielder Spencer Abbott (men's soccer) scored the game-winning goal in the Spartans 2-0 win over Trine on Saturday at Weaver Field in Angola, Indiana. Abbott, who came into the game as a substitute in the 31st minute, found the back of the net in the 44th minute with an assist from senior Cormac Apostolides. It was his first career goal, first collegiate points, and first game-winning score. Abbott, who has appeared in every game this season for the Spartans, also logged 29 minutes in a scoreless tie with John Carroll on Wednesday night. CWRU improved to 8-0-1 with the win and will enter conference play without a loss for the second consecutive season.
Graduate student midfielder/forward Sophie Berman (women's soccer) scored her second goal of the campaign in a loss to Denison on Saturday afternoon at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium in Granville, Ohio. Berman found the back of the net in the 21st minute of the contest, giving CWRU an early 2-0 lead. She received a corner kick off a bounce on the far side post, corralled the ball, and sent a left-footed shot into the top corner of the goal for the score. It was her 18th career goal and second of the season. CWRU fell to 5-3-1 this season with the loss.
The Spartans will return home to wrap up non-conference play, facing Heidelberg University on Tuesday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m.
Junior defensive specialist Sophia Datto (volleyball) paced the Spartans in digs at the first University Athletic Association Round Robin hosted by the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, on Saturday and Sunday. Datto finished the weekend with 43 digs across nine sets (4.78 per set), including a season-high 25 digs in a three-set win over Rochester on Sunday morning. She added 10 digs in a three-set loss to eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon and eight in a three-set loss to 24th-ranked Chicago. Datto finished the weekend with 16 assists (1.78 per set). This season, she leads the team with 187 digs (3.53 per set) while adding 51 assists. The Spartans dropped to 8-7 this season with a 1-2 mark in conference play following the first round robin.
The Spartans will take a break from conference play with a pair of matches in Granville, Ohio, on Saturday, October 3. CWRU will face Ohio Wesleyan at 2 p.m. and Denison at 4 p.m.
Senior linebacker Michael Gevaudan (football) had a career-best day during the Spartans' 35-7 loss to Washington & Jefferson College at DiSanto Field on Saturday. Gevaudan led the Spartans in the game with six tackles (four solo) and 1.5 tackles for loss, both career-high marks. His effort also helped the Spartans hold the Presidents to just 48 passing yards during the game. Gevaudan has nine tackles this season (five solo), including 1.5 for loss. The Spartans stand at 2-1 overall and 0-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
The Spartans will travel to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, for a 1 p.m. PAC game against Westminster College on Saturday, October 3.
Junior running back Andy Kavcic (football) notched his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game during the Spartans' 35-7 loss to Washington & Jefferson College at DiSanto Field on Saturday. Kavcic finished the game with 21 carries for 162 yards and a 14-yard touchdown run, while catching three passes for 45 yards, both team highs. Among his touches were a 51-yard carry, one of seven gains of 10 or more yards, and four of 20 or more he notched during the contest. Kavcic is currently fifth among Division III players this season with 163.3 rushing yards per game and third with 212.0 all-purpose yards per game. He has 70 carries for 490 yards with three touchdowns on the ground this year, while catching 15 passes for 146 yards and an additional score, and became the 22nd player in program history with over 1,000 career rushing yards with his effort on Saturday.
Junior Jake Kavcic (football) had a strong performance in the return game for the Spartans during the team's 35-7 loss to Washington & Jefferson College at DiSanto Field on Saturday. Kavcic returned a pair of punts for an average of 20 yards (including a long of 21 yards), and two kicks for an average of 22.5 yards (including a long of 25 yards). He also added five tackles (all solo) on defense during the contest. Kavcic is currently 17th among Division III players with 14.0 yards per punt return, while averaging 21.3 yards per kick return, and has 17 tackles (16 solo) and a pair of sacks this year.
Junior Jon Totorica (men's tennis) went 4-0 in singles matches and 3-1 in doubles play at the Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, over the weekend. Totorica picked up singles wins over Isaac Vens and Jorge Ruiz from Grand Valley State, Harry Forsyth from Wayne State, and Jose Pinto from Tiffin. He also teamed with Rohit Jain to best Luka Gilbert and Max Westall from Tiffin, Pinto and Marlon Huber from Tiffin, and Bora Bakici and Emile Dupanloup from Grand Valley State.
The Spartans will send their top players to the ITA Fall Central Region Championship at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, from Friday, October 2, through Sunday, October 4.
First-year outside hitter Maya Zarow (volleyball) led the Spartan offensive attack at the first University Athletic Association Round Robin hosted by the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, on Saturday and Sunday. Zarow had 28 kills, averaging 3.11 kills per set, and 10 digs in three matches as CWRU went 1-2 over the weekend. On Friday, Zarow had eight kills in a three-set loss to eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon and nine kills in a three-set loss to 24th-ranked Chicago later in the day. She closed the weekend with an 11-kill, seven-dig performance in a three-set win over Rochester on Saturday, hitting .333 in the match. This season, Zarow is leading the team with 177 kills (3.34 per set) on a .248 hitting percentage.
