Both the 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team and 17th-ranked CWRU women's swimming and diving team fell to Carnegie Mellon University in a dual meet on Saturday at the CMU Pool in Pittsburgh.
The Spartan men's squad lost 211-87 to the seventh-ranked Tartans, and the Case Western Reserve women's team dropped a 161-139 decision to 15th-ranked CMU. Both Spartan teams fell to 2-1 on the season, while both Carnegie Mellon squads improved to 2-0 in dual meets.
The Case Western Reserve women's team won seven events at the dual, including both relays. In the 200 Medley Relay, first-year Sayjel Tan, junior Claire Kozma, and seniors Kate Menzer and Gabriella Chambers placed first in 1:47.46, and in the 400 Free Relay, Kozma, Chambers, first-year Marina Oria, and senior Angeli Paull won in 3:35.53. Chambers was the top finisher in both the 200 Free (1:56.69) and 100 Free (52.99). Kozma added a pair of individual victories, taking the 50 Free in 24.29 seconds and the 100 Fly in 57.25 seconds. Finally, with a time of 2:10.61, Menzer won the 200 IM. She later added a second-place finish in the 100 Breast in 1:07.16.
The Spartans added five second-place finishes in events at the dual. Senior Kelly Vann touched the wall just 0.63 seconds after Kozma in the 50 Free, recording a time of 24.92 seconds. Senior Simone Vale placed second in the 100 Back with a time of 59.13 seconds, and first-year Marina Oria was second in the 100 Free in 54.31 seconds, trailing only teammate Gabriella Chambers.
On the boards, senior Abigail Wilkov had the second-best score in the 1-meter dive (225.37) and senior Jocelyn Schechter placed second in the 3-meter dive (231.10).
Senior Peter Meng and junior John Drumm both won events for the CWRU men's team. Meng placed first in the 1000 Free in 9:46.32 and added runner-up finishes in the 200 Breast (2:07.54) and 200 IM (1:54.38). Drumm touched the wall first in both the 200 Fly in 1:52.61 and the 500 Free in 4:42.46.
Junior Mason Bencurik placed second in the 200 Free with a time of 1:41.56, and junior William Froass added a second place finish in the 200 Back in 1:55.67. Senior Alex Waltman was the runner-up in the 3-meter dive with a score of 254.40.
After two weeks off from intercollegiate competition, the Spartans will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule with the Total Performance Invite hosted by Kenyon and CMU Diving Invite. The three-day swim meet starts on Thursday, November 21, while the two-day diving meet begins on Friday, November 22.
