CWRU Suffers Sunday Setback at WashU, 82-65

Box Score

Case Western Reserve University senior guard Sarah Mitchell recorded her second-straight 20-point game and graduate student forward Kate Montgomery made a career-high four three-point shots, but it was not enough for the Spartans who suffered an 82-65 loss to Washington University (Mo.) in St. Louis on Sunday.

With half of its University Athletic Association schedule now complete, the Spartans fell to 1-6 in conference play and to 8-10 overall. WashU improved to 11-7 overall with a 4-3 UAA record.

After scoring a career-high 22 points on Friday against Chicago, Mitchell followed with a 20-point effort against the Bears on Sunday, shooting five-of-13 overall, one-of-three from long range, and nine-of-nine from the free throw line. She added five rebounds, an assist, and a pair of steals.

Montgomery scored all of her season-high 16 points in the first half of the game and made a career-high four three-point shots on five attempts. Senior forward Kayla Characklis added a team-leading nine rebounds and two blocks with six points.

CWRU trailed early in the game and was down by as many as four points during the opening period, but stormed back to end the frame on a 6-1 run to take a 19-17 lead by the end of the quarter. Layups by first-year guard Mya Hartjes and graduate student forward Morgan Micallef on back-to-back possessions gave CWRU its first lead of the game, 17-16, with 2:16 remaining in the first, and after a free throw from the Bears tied the score, Mitchell connected on a layup to put CWRU ahead by a pair with 52 seconds on the clock.

The Bears tied the score at 19-19 to start the second, but the Spartans responded with an 8-0 run, keyed by a pair of WashU turnovers and two threes from Montgomery that put CWRU in front 27-19 with 7:22 to play in the half, the team's largest lead of the game. The Spartans maintained at least a two-possession lead for the rest of the period, and a hook shot by Montgomery with 56 seconds left in the frame gave CWRU a 40-33 lead heading into the half.

By the time halftime rolled around, Montgomery had already passed her season high for points and made three-pointers. As a team, CWRU ended the opening 20 minutes shooting 45.7% (16-35) overall and 38.9% (7-18) from long range.

The Spartans maintained a lead over the Bears until a layup by Jessica Brooks turned a 46-45 CWRU advantage into a 47-46 lead for WashU, the Bears' first lead since the first quarter. WashU never trailed again in the game, going on to close out the third with an eight-point lead, taking a 61-53 advantage into the final frame, and building a 14-point lead, 74-60, with 5:26 to play. WashU led by as many as 17 points in the closing minutes of the game en route to the win.

The Spartans will be back at home next weekend, hosting Chicago on Friday night and WashU on Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
