Case Western Reserve University senior James Hopper and junior Vishwa Aduru were named the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for Men's Tennis after leading the Spartans to the NCAA Division III Team Championship and claiming the NCAA Doubles Title last week.
The duo played in the no. 1 position for the Spartans in the semifinals and championship match of the team tournament, winning each match. They then went on to go 4-0 in the doubles tournament, clinching the NCAA Division III Championship with a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (5) win against Michael Melnikov and Utham Koduri of Swarthmore. The two also each went 4-1 in singles play during the week, with Aduru providing the clinching point in the Spartans' semifinal win against Middlebury, and Hopper providing the NCAA Championship-clinching victory against Tufts. Aduru reached the semifinals of the singles draw, while Hopper made it to the quarterfinals.
The two finished the season with a 31-2 record together, with their only two doubles losses coming against Division I competition at the ITA Fall Nationals. This was the fourth time this season and the 13th time over his career that Hopper has been named the UAA Athlete of the Week, while Aduru claimed the honor for the third time in his career, each coming this season.
Sunday's doubles championship completed the 2022-23 season for the CWRU men's tennis team, which set a program record for wins with a 33-4 record, won its second-straight ITA Indoor Championship, the first University Athletic Association Championship, and claimed the NCAA Division III Team Championship.
