Kassaie's Historic Run Ends in NCAA Singles Quarterfinals

Sophomore Hannah Kassaie of the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team ended her historic run at the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, on the second day of competition Saturday.

Kassaie, seeded fifth in the 32-player singles draw, faced top-seeded Olivia Soffer of Babson in the quarterfinal, the furthest any Spartan reached in program history. With her appearance in the quarterfinals, Kassaie earned her fourth career All-America honors and second in singles competition.

Soffer won the first set 6-3. The Babson player won the first two games, but Kassaie tied the score at two. She took the lead in the set by breaking Soffer's serve but fell in the next four games to drop the set.

Kassaie came back to win the second set, forcing a decisive third set. She started strong, winning the first three games to lead 3-0. After Soffer held serve, the two players split the next four games, including two wins by Kassaie on decisive points. She lost the next game, but broke serve in the 10th game on the deciding point to claim the set.

The two players held serve in the first two games, before Soffer won a breakpoint and followed with a win on serve to lead 3-1. Kassaie, who won each of the next four games she served, was unable to break serve and fell 4-6 in the final set.

During her run, Kassaie bested unseeded Katherine Orgielewicz of Williams 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and advanced to the quarterfinal after Audrey Yoon of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps withdrew due to injury. She ends the season with a singles record of 21-3 (.875), the second-most wins in a single season in program history.

The loss marks the end of the season for the women's tennis team, which qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year and had two players receive invitations to the individual championships.
