Singles Draw | Doubles Draw
Two members of the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team will continue their seasons in the singles and doubles draws of the NCAA Division II Championship which is scheduled to begin on Friday morning at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Sophomore Hannah Kassaie earned the fifth seed in the singles draw, her second consecutive season receiving a top eight seed. She will face unseeded Katherine Orgielewicz of Williams in the first round at 9 a.m. If she advances, Kassaie will take on the winner of the first round matchup between Ida Krause of NYU and Audrey Yoon of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the round of 16 on Friday at 1 p.m.
Kassaie has a record of 19-2 record in singles play this season, with her last loss coming on February 26. She has not faced Orgielewicz or Yoon this season, but she bested Krause on April 20 at the University Athletic Association Championship.
The draw will continue with one match per day, with the quarterfinals scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m., the semifinals for Sunday at 10 a.m., and the final for Monday, May 22 at 10 a.m. Former Spartan Madeleine Paolucci made the furthest run by a CWRU player in the national tournament in 2019, reaching the round of 16 that season.
In the doubles bracket, Kassaie and fellow sophomore Lily McCloskey earned the second seed in the 16-pairing draw after entering last year's draw unseeded. The duo will face the unseeded partnership of Brooke Despriet and Katherine Petty from Sewanee in the first round on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the winner of the matchup between Allaire Berl and Eleni Lazaridou of Kenyon and Loma Flores Gonzalez and Nikki Ridenour of RPI.
Last season, Kassaie and McCloskey reached the quarterfinals with a first round win, earning All-America honors for their efforts. The quarterfinal run matched the furthest of any pairing in program history.
The semifinals of the doubles draw will start on Sunday at 12 p.m. with the NCAA Championship slated for Monday, May 22 at 12 p.m.
The Spartan doubles team is 21-5 this season, including wins in its last five matches. The first round matchup is a rematch of the first doubles match between CWRU and Sewanee in the NCAA Second Round, which Kassaie and McCloskey won 8-6.
