The 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team placed sixth at the 2023 University Athletic Association Championship with a 5-1 loss to 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in the Fifth-Place Match on Saturday at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
The fourth-seeded Spartans fell to 14-5 on the season and 1-2 in UAA play, while the third-seeded Tartans, who placed fifth in the conference, improved to 19-5 and 2-1 in conference play.
CWRU started strong, earning the first team point at first doubles. Sophomores Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey defeated Danna Taylor and Crystal Zhou 8-2 to give Case Western Reserve the early lead. However, CMU prevailed in a tight match at third doubles, 8-7 (7-5), and won 8-6 at second doubles to hold a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
Taylor bested McCloskey at second singles 6-2, 6-4, Anika Joshi prevailed at sixth singles 6-3, 6-4, and Zhou clinched the win for Carnegie Mellon with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at third singles.
When the match was halted after reaching a decision, Kassaie led Sarah Yang 6-2, 4-4 at first singles, first-year Katalina Wang was in the third set at fourth singles trailing 6-1, 3-6, 1-3, and sophomore Anna Kan was down at fifth singles 3-6, 6-6.
The loss ends the scheduled season for Case Western Reserve. Team selections for the 2023 NCAA Division III Championship will be announced on Monday, May 1, with individual selections for the singles and doubles championships released on Wednesday, May 3.
