The 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team lost in the 2023 University Athletic Association Championship Quarterfinal on Thursday morning at Sanlando Park Altamonte Springs, Florida, falling to 18th-ranked New York University 5-3.
The fourth-seeded Spartans fell to 13-4 on the season and 0-1 in UAA contests, while the fifth-seeded Violets improved to 10-1 and 1-0 in the UAA.
CWRU will play eighth-seeded Rochester in the consolation round, while NYU advances to the Semifinal Round to face top-ranked and top-seeded Chicago. Both matches are scheduled for tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
CWRU held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Sophomores Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey, ranked first in Region V, started the match with an 8-4 win over Ida Krause and Dakota Fordham, the top-ranked pair in Region II, at first doubles. The Violets tied the match with a win at third doubles as Jimena Menendez and Anastasiia Balyk bested juniors Pallavi Goculdas and Katherine Wang 8-4. However, the Spartans reclaimed the lead with a win at second doubles as sophomore Radha Patel and first-year Katalina Wang won 8-6 over Karina Jensrud and Molly Heber.
Heber tied the score with a win at sixth singles, defeating first-year Elsa Syed 6-3, 6-3. Kassaie, ranked second in the region at singles, gave CWRU the lead with a 6-2, 7-5 win at first singles over Krause, ranked first in the region. At fifth singles, sophomore Anna Kan dropped a tight match to Aditi Narayan, 6-7 (7-9), 6-7 (3-7) to tie the score at three. The Violets won the next two singles matches to clinch the team point, prevailing 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-1 at fourth singles and 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at second singles.
When the match was called, Patel led Jensrud 5-7, 6-2, 4-1 at third singles.
