The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams opened their outdoor seasons at the two-day Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival at Wilson Field in Lexington, Virginia. The Spartans won two events at the meet and totaled seven top-three finishes.
Junior thrower Adrienne Wachtman earned a top-three finish in three of the four throwing events. She won the javelin throw with a mark of 38.35 meters, placed second in the discus throw with a heave of 36.82 meters, and finished third in the shot put with a toss of 11.17 meters. Sophomore thrower Lauren Roskuszka was the runner-up in the javelin, recording a mark of 37.64 meters, and first-year thrower Michelle Lee placed eighth with a throw of 28.72 meters.
Sophomore hurdler/jumper Sarah Ozeki also won an event for CWRU, taking first place in the triple jump by bounding 10.91 meters. She added an eighth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.73 seconds.
In addition, junior runner Jessica Kwasny earned a pair of top-seven finishes in distance events, placing fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:21.41 and seventh in the 1,500-meter run in 4:59.31.
A trio of seniors on the women's track and field team placed in the top six in their events. Thrower Tori Cohen had the third-best mark in the hammer throw, 43.01 meters, runner Catherine Phillips placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:30.59, and jumper Mia Vargo cleared 1.43 meters in the high jump to place sixth.
For the men's team, a pair of Spartans earned top-eight finishes both as an individual and on a relay. The 4x400-meter relay of graduate student sprinter Juan Perez, first-year sprinter Aaron Brula, senior sprinter/hurdler Pierce Boucher, and senior runner Will Dehmler placed seventh in 3:26.96. Individually, Perez finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.38 seconds, and Brula recorded the eighth-fastest time in the 400-meter dash, 52.96 seconds. Perez added a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 22.56 seconds.
The team's top finisher was sophomore runner Aidan Nathan, who was the runner-up in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:57.54.
Two Case Western Reserve student-athletes placed in the top eight in the triple jump, with sophomore jumper Andrew Qi taking fifth with a mark of 12.91 meters and senior jumper Kenny Suen earning eighth with a mark 12.21 meters.
Senior hurdler Peculiar Nzegbuna placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 15.68 seconds, and senior runner Bryden Moxley placed sixth in the 800-meter run in 1:58.68. In the 400-meter hurdles, senior hurdler Putu Randy Radiarta placed eighth with a time of 59.21 seconds, and, in the 200-meter dash, junior sprinter Brett Callow placed eighth in 22.59 seconds.
Next weekend, the Spartans will travel to Pittsburgh for the two-day CMU Invitational, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25.
