The Case Western Reserve University women's 800 freestyle relay broke a 21-year-old school record on the first day of the 2023 University Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Emory University at the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta on Wednesday night.

The relay of sophomores Angeli Paull and Gabriella Chambers and seniors Abby Halsdorfer and Maria Pritchett recorded a time of 7:37.06, besting the previous school record of 7:41.13 set in 2002 by All-Americans Alicia Kendig, Veronica Luri, Liz Badziong, and Kelly Alexander in 2002. The Spartans, who finished fifth in the event, also recorded an NCAA B cut time.

The men's 800 Free Relay of first-years Mason Bencurik and John Drumm, sophomore Stephen Hogeman, and senior Andrew Smith also recorded an NCAA B cut time, finishing in 6:44.24. The relay placed fifth in the event.

The men's 1-meter diving event also took place on the first day of the conference championship, with sophomore Nico Billoni placing 14th with 329.75 points, sophomore Trevor Elliott placing 15th with 310.95 points, and sophomore Ben Wellnitz placing 17th with 208.25 points.

Overall, the 15th-ranked women's swimming and diving team is tied for fourth in the conference after the first day with 78 points, and the #15 men's swimming and diving team is in fourth place with 109 points. NYU and Chicago are tied atop the women's standings with 96 points each, while the Carnegie Mellon men's team leads the conference after the first day with 195 points.

The UAA Championships resume tomorrow with the prelims for the 200 Free Relay, 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, and women's 3-meter dive beginning at 10 a.m. Finals for those events and the 400 Medley Relay begin at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow evening.
