Wrestling Splits Two at Hiram Duals

The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team split a pair of duals at the Fleming Fieldhouse in Hiram, Ohio, on Saturday, defeating Hiram College 42-6 but falling to Heidelberg University 27-19.

With the split, the Spartans end the season with a record of 11-4 in dual matches. The Terriers fell to 3-10 overall, while the Student Princes improved to 7-6.

First-year E.J. Alizio and senior Mitchell Arch each won both of their matches by fall in the duals. First-years Art Martinez and Calvin Rowan also added a pair of wins, with one of Rowan's coming by pin.

CWRU 42, Hiram 6

Case Western Reserve won nine of the 10 matches in the dual against Hiram. Alizio started with a pin in 3:00 over Ian Fuentes, his fifth of the season at 125 pounds. First-year Jacob Gregg followed with a major decision at 133 pounds, with Martinez adding a decision at 141 pounds. Rowan, in the 149-pound match, recorded his fourth pin of the season in 1:33 over Grayson Smith to put the Spartans ahead 19-0.

Following a win by decision for first-year Thomas Wagner at 157 pounds, Arch won the 165-pound match via fall over Seth Holt in 4:00 to make the score 29-0 in favor of CWRU. Before sophomore Calvin Cai won the 184-pound match via fall in 5:30, his fourth pin of the season, first-year John Conover added a win by decision at 174 pounds. Senior Stephen Andryc ended the scoring for the Spartans with his first career technical fall, defeating Zach Harper 24-9 at 197 pounds.

Heidelberg 27, CWRU 19

Alizio started the second match of the day with his second fall, defeating Cole Renier in 5:43 to secure his 21st win of the season. Following a loss by decision at 133 pounds, CWRU won the next three matches to open up a 19-3 advantage in the dual. Martinez started the run with a 13-4 major decision, his 30th win of the season. Rowan followed with a decision, and Arch capped the run with a win by fall in 1:45 over Anthony Grecol at 157 pounds. It was Arch's team-leading 14th pin of the season and the 56th of his career.

With six-point wins in the next three matches, Heidelberg took a 21-19 lead with two matches remaining. The Student Princes took both by decision to claim the dual win.

The Spartans will next head to Chicago for the 2023 University Athletic Association Wrestling Championship, hosted by the University of Chicago, on Saturday, February 11 with action slated to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
