The 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team won its sixth straight match to open the season on Sunday, defeating the 14th-ranked University of Mary Washington 6-3 at the Duchossois Tennis Center in Lexington, Virginia.
The Spartans improved to 6-0 in dual matches, while the Eagles dropped to 1-1.
CWRU swept the doubles matches to open the day. At first doubles, sophomores Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey did not drop a point against Amanda Hagino and Hana Kimmey, the 20th ranked doubles pair in Division III, winning 8-0. Juniors Pallavi Goculdas and Katherine Wang followed with an 8-2 win at third doubles, besting Emily Beckner and Riley Smith. To complete the sweep, sophomore Radha Patel and first-year Katalina Wang defeated Abigail Moghtader and Rebecca Stepleman 8-2 at second doubles.
Kassaie, the 29th ranked singles player nationally, put the Spartans one point away from a match victory with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Moghtader at first singles. UMW earned their first team point with a win at fourth singles when Stepleman defeated sophomore Anna Kan 5-7, 4-6. However, Patel clinched the win with a third singles victory, besting Kimmey in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Goculdas added a point to the team total with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Smith at sixth singles.
The Eagles won their second point at second singles, with McCloskey, ranked 39th in Division III, falling to Hagino in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), Mary Washington finished the match with a 3-6, 3-6 win at fifth singles.
The Spartans will look to keep their winning streak alive when they return home next week, facing #27 Kenyon College on Sunday, February 26 at 5 p.m.
