The 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team won its fifth straight match to start the 2023 season, defeating 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport University 9-0 at the Duchossois Tennis Center in Lexington, Virginia on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans improved to 5-0 with the win, while the Captains fell to 0-4.
To start doubles play, sophomore Anna Kan and senior Nina Hoog defeated Kiersten Chang and Kendra Womack 8-2 at third doubles to put the Spartans on the board. Sophomore Radha Patel and first-year Katalina Wang followed with an 8-3 win at second doubles over Megan Bauer and Mia Linam. At first doubles, sophomores Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey prevailed in a thrilling tiebreaker, besting Tessa Trate and Raine Weis 8-7 (13-11) to complete the sweep.
Kassaie, ranked 29th in Division III in singles, followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Trate at first singles. Patel clinched the match for CWRU by not dropping a point at third singles. She earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Anna Campbell.
Wang added the sixth team point for the Spartans with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over Womack at fourth singles, and McCloskey, the 39th-ranked singles player in the country, followed with a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Linam. To close the match, junior Pallavi Goculdas bested Bauer 6-2, 6-3 at sixth singles, and first-year Asha Shukla defeated Logan Glen 6-3, 6-4 at fifth singles.
The Spartans will wrap up their trip to Lexington on Sunday with a matchup against #14 Mary Washington at 9 a.m.
