The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's soccer teams concluded their regular seasons on Saturday with trips to Carnegie Mellon University. Both teams are hoping to receive at-large selections to the NCAA Championship tournament to extend their seasons further into November.
The NCAA Division III Championship Selection Shows for both sports will be broadcast tomorrow, November 6, on ncaa.com starting at 1:30 p.m. The half hour shows will reveal the complete bracket of 64 teams for both sports, including teams and locations. Dates and times for matches will be announced on the NCAA website concurrently with the broadcast.
Women's Soccer
The Spartans ended the regular season with just one loss, compiling a 11-1-4 (.812) record against the toughest schedule by opponent record in Division III. CWRU placed third in the University Athletic Association with a mark of 3-1-3, just two points behind champion WashU (4-0-2) and one point behind runner-up Rochester (3-0-4). Heading into the weekend, Case Western Reserve was nationally ranked eighth by the United Soccer Coaches and was first in Region VII in the NCAA Regional Rankings, which are used to determine the at-large selections. The Spartans are hoping to make their fourth consecutive postseason appearance and fifth in program history. Last season, the team reached the national championship, the furthest any women's team has advanced in Case Western Reserve history. CWRU has an all-time record of 8-3-1 in NCAA Tournament matches.
The women's soccer selection show is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. In the field of 64, 42 teams earn automatic entry by winning their conferences, and Case Western Reserve is hoping to be selected as one of the 22 at-large entries.
Men's Soccer
After defeating archrival Carnegie Mellon 2-0 in the regular season finale, the Spartans finished the regular season with a record of 9-3-3 (.700). CWRU placed third in the UAA with a mark of 3-2-2, just four points behind champion Emory (5-2-0). Heading into the weekend, Case Western Reserve ranked fourth in Region VII in the NCAA Regional Rankings (which are used to determine the at-large selections) and had the highest in-division calculated strength of schedule (.597) in the region. The Spartans are hoping to make their second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the fifth in program history. Last season, the team tied Muhlenberg in the first round and did not advance following a penalty kick shootout. In 2018, CWRU reached the national quarterfinal, the furthest run in program history. All-time the men's soccer team has a 4-2-3 record in postseason matches.
