The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming teams each set a school record on the first day of the Total Performance Invitational at the Steen Aquatic Center in Gambier, Ohio, on Thursday.Â
For the men's team, the 400 Medley Relay of sophomores Emil LaSida, John Drumm, and Mason Bencurik, and senior Ethan Chuang set a new school record with a time of 3:18.26. Their time bested the previous record of 3:18.48, set by LaSida, Chuang, Drumm, and former Spartan Andrew Smith at the 2023 Midwest Invite. CWRU, which also recorded an NCAA B cut time in the event, placed fifth in the race.Â
For the women's team, the 200 Free Relay of sophomores Claire Kozma and Eliza Dixon and juniors Kelly Vann and Gabriella Chambers bested the program record held by two relays with a time of 1:34.05. The previous record of 1:34.95 was last tied by Kozma, Dixon, Chambers, and junior Kate Menzer at the 2023 University Athletic Association Championships. The Spartans, who placed second in the event, also recorded an NCAA B cut time, the team's first of the night.Â
In addition, the 400 Medley Relay of Menzer, Kozma, Chambers, and junior Erica Rice recorded a B Cut with a time of 3:50.47, placing fifth in the event.Â
Kozma earned the highest individual finish for a Spartan swimmer on the first day of the invite, placing fourth in the 50 Free with an A Final time of 23.64 seconds. Vann, who joined Kozma in the A Final, placed eighth with a time of 23.95 seconds after swimming 23.80 seconds in the prelims. Chambers placed 12th in the event with a finals time of 23.97 seconds, Dixon finished 14th in 24.21 seconds, and junior Adriana Kamor touched the wall in 24.51 seconds to place 20th.
Menzer added an 18th-place finish in the 200 IM, finishing the B Final of the event in 2:08.45 after swimming the 14th-fastest prelims time (2:07.63). Sophomore Julia Cho placed 21st in the event with a finals time of 2:08.54.Â
Finally, in the 500 Free first-year Ava Ellis placed 14th in 5:07.36 after swimming a prelims time of 5:05.59.Â
Three members of the CWRU men's team competed in the B Final of the 50 Free with junior Jackson Pollard placing 15th (21.05 seconds), junior Ben Zuo finishing 18th (21.13), and Bencurik placing 20th (21.17).
Junior Jace Creech earned a 17th-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.46, leading a trio of Spartan swimmers in the event. Sophomore Joshua Hernandez finished 18th in 1:56.08, and sophomore Tyler Ahten touched the wall at 1:58.43 to place 20th. In the prelims, Ahten recorded a time of 1:55.53.Â
Junior Griffin Gushman reached the B Final of the 500 Free with a preliminary time of 4:37.82. He placed 18th in the final after recording a time of 4:38.23.Â
Action on the second day of the Total Performance Invitational begins at 10:30 a.m. with finals scheduled for 6 p.m. Members of the Spartan diving teams will travel to Pittsburgh tomorrow for the two-day CMU Diving Invitational.
