The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Oberlin College in a dual meet on Friday night at Carr Pool in Oberlin, Ohio. The 15th-ranked Spartan men's team won 140-85, and the 15th-ranked Spartan women's team prevailed 179-58.
With the sweep, both teams ended the season with a 4-2 record in dual meets, while both the Yeomen and Yeowomen fell to 6-6 in duals.
The Spartan women's team placed first in 12 of the 13 events held on Friday night, with the men's team winning nine of the 13 events.
Sophomore swimmer Gabriella Chambers contributed to four of the first place finishes, including two individual wins and two relay wins. To start the day, Chambers teamed with first-year swimmers Kate Trembly and Claire Kozma and sophomore Ally Solomon to win the 200 Medley Relay in 1:50.72. Chambers and Kozma concluded the night by joining sophomores Angeli Paull and Adriana Kamor for a first place finish in the 400 Free Relay in 3:38.95. Chambers added individual wins in the 50 Free and 100 Free, touching the wall at 24.43 seconds and 53.66 seconds, respectively.
Solomon added two individual wins, taking first in the 200 IM in 2:17.77 and the 100 Breast in 1:10.22. Kozma tallied a third win in the 200 Free, finishing in 1:58.08, and Trembly contributed an individual win in the 100 Back with a time of 1:00.92.
Senior Abby Halsdorfer and first-year Kailyn Smith also attained victories in events for the Spartans. Halsdorfer won the 500 Free in 5:18.94, and Smith took the 100 Fly in 1:00.98.
Sophomore diver Jocelyn Schechter swept the diving events with scores of 275.55 in the 1-meter dive and 258.60 in the 3-meter dive.
For the men's team, sophomore swimmer Stephen Hogeman and seniors Andrew Smith and Campbell Patterson all contributed to three wins. Smith and Patterson started the day with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, joining seniors Connor Chignell and Patrick Cavanaugh to finish in 1:38.14. Later, Smith, Patterson, Hogeman, and sophomore Adam Knorz placed first in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:27.26. Hogeman, Smith, and Patterson ended the night with a 3:12.74 finish in the 400 Free Relay, winning the event with sophomore Cole Davin. Individually, Hogeman won the 200 Free in 1:45.69.
Sophomore Jace Creech added two wins for CWRU, taking first in the 200 IM and 100 Back. He touched the wall at 2:00.29 in the individual medley and 53.97 seconds in the backstroke.
Sophomore diver Trevor Elliott and first-year swimmers Joshua Hernandez and Spencer Ahten contributed wins for Case Western Reserve. Elliott placed first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 215.20, Hernandez paced the 100 Fly with a time of 53.43 seconds, and Ahten touched the wall first in the 100 Breast at 1:01.06.
The Spartans will take a week off from competition to prepare for the 2023 University Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships. The four-day meet begins on Wednesday, February 8 at the Woodruff P.E. Center on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta.
