The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Kenyon College in a dual meet on Saturday at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland. The second-ranked Owl men's team defeated the 15th-ranked Spartans 178-122, and the #1 Kenyon women's team bested #18 CWRU 190-110.
Prior to the dual, the Spartans celebrated their 10 senior members—Patrick Cavanaugh, Connor Chignell, Justin Christensen, Abby Halsdorfer, Julie Mason, Elizabeth McDyer, Campbell Patterson, Johanna Pearson, Andrew Smith, and Erica Yang—as part of Senior Day.
Both Case Western Reserve teams fell to 3-2 in duals this season, while both Kenyon teams improved to 7-1.
Seven different Spartans won seven different events at the meet.
Sophomore Jackson Pollard won the 100 Fly in 51.62 seconds, besting sophomore teammate Ben Zuo by 0.16 seconds. Pollard and Zuo were also members of the second place 200 Medley Relay, along with first-year Emil LaSida and junior Ethan Chuang that placed finished in 1:32.91, and the second place 200 Free Relay, joining first-year swimmers Ben Borvendeg and John Drumm to finish in 1:25.76.
In the 100 Back, first-year William Froass was the first to touch the wall, doing so in 51.68 seconds. Froass was the runner-up in the 200 Back with a time of 1:54.35. Adding wins for the men's team were sophomore Kevin Hu, finishing the 200 Fly in 1:56.40, and first-year Mason Bencurik, placing first in the 100 Free in 47.03 seconds.
For the women's team, sophomore Gabriella Chambers took first in the 100 Free, touching the wall at 52.56. She added an individual second place finish in the 50 Free with a time of 23.98 seconds and was a member of the second place 200 Free Relay, joining first-years Eliza Dixon and Claire Kozma and sophomore Adriana Kamor to finish in 1:38.66.
Sophomore diver Abigail Wilkov won the 1-meter dive with a score of 257.65 with sophomore diver Jocelyn Schechter taking second with a score of 255.70. In the 3-meter dive, junior diver Rei Miyauchi won with a mark of 270.20 and Wilkov placed second with a score of 266.65.
Drumm and Chuang each added a pair of second place finishes to their days. Drumm was the runner-up in both the 100 and 200 Free, finishing the shorter race in 47.31 seconds and the longer one in 1:43.69. Chuang placed second in both the 100 and 200 Breast, touching the wall in 58.39 seconds and 2:10.60, respectively. Sophomore Amelia Myhrvold earned two second place finishes as well, taking the runner-up spot in the 100 Back in 59.79 seconds and the 200 Back in 2:07.97.
LaSida and Zuo placed second in an additional event, with the first-year swimmer finishing the 100 Back in 51.83 seconds and the sophomore swimmer finishing the 50 Free in 21.39 seconds. Rounding out the top two finishes for Case Western Reserve's men's team was first-year swimmer Milo Balzer, taking second in the 200 Fly in 1:56.54.
On Senior Day, Pearson placed second in the 1000 Free, recording a time of 10:59.86. Junior Emma Guarnieri contributed a second place finish in the 200 Breast, touching the wall at 2:32.27.
The Spartans will race their final dual of the 2022-23 season next Friday before ramping up for their championship season. Case Western Reserve travels to Oberlin, Ohio to face Oberlin College, with action starting at 6 p.m.
