Box Score The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team defeated the University of Rochester 3-0 on Sunday at the WU Field House on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis in St. Louis, Missouri on Sunday on the final day of the first University Athletic Association Round Robin.
The Spartans improved to 9-3 on the season and 1-2 in UAA play, while the Yellowjackets fell to 6-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
With the score tied at five early in the first set, CWRU claimed five of the next seven points to stake a 10-7 advantage. Later in the set, Case Western Reserve would build their lead to seven, 22-15, on a service ace by senior setter Sara Rogers. Following three Rochester points, the Spartans would use two kills by junior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo and one by sophomore outside hitter Rea Marfatia to claim the first set at 25-18.
The Spartans started the second set by winning 10 of the first 13 points to claim a seven-point advantage. After the Yellowjackets rallied to within five, a block and four Spartan kills gave CWRU a 17-6 lead late in the set. Despite Rochester winning the next four points, CWRU won seven of the next 11 points to win the set at 25-16 and go up 2-0 in the match.
Case Western Reserve started the third set with a 5-1 run to claim an early lead. A short Rochester rally brought the Yellowjackets within two, 7-5, but the Spartans used a 6-1 run to take a seven-point lead. After three Rochester points, CWRU claimed eight of the next 10 points to lead 21-11. Four Spartan points closed out the set at 25-13 and the match at 3-0.
Ngo led the team with nine kills while also adding five digs and two total blocks. Marfatia added six kills and eight digs, while sophomore outside/right side hitter Chloe Maciejewski had a season-high six kills. Junior libero Alyssa Blessinger contributed a team-leading 15 digs with Rogers and sophomore defensive specialist Maria Tuepker each adding 11 digs.
CWRU returns to non-conference play on Saturday, September 24, when the team faces Kenyon and Denison in Granville, Ohio, starting at 2 p.m.
