Volleyball Falls to Mount Union in Season Opener

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team kicked off its 2026 campaign on Tuesday night, suffering a 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 17-25, 25-19) loss to the University of Mount Union inside Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

The Spartans fell to 0-1 on the season with the loss, while the Purple Raiders improved to 1-0.

Stats and Standouts

  • Making her collegiate debut on Tuesday, first-year Maya Zarow led the Spartans with 19 kills and a .412 hitting percentage (19-5-34), while collecting 10 digs.

  • Senior Emily Goodpaster added 15 kills and tied for the team lead with 13 digs.

  • Junior Avery Basinger and first-year Piper Starling each had a team-leading 23 assists and two service aces.

First Set: Mount Union 25, CWRU 20

  • The Spartans got off to a quick start to the match, taking a 10-3 lead on a kill by Goodpaster.

  • Mount Union battled back, eventually knotting the score at 16 points apiece, before taking its first lead of the match at 18-17.

  • The Purple Raiders maintained a lead for the rest of the set, pulling away for the 25-20 win.

  • Goodpaster led all players with six kills and four digs in the opening set, with Zarow adding four kills in the frame.

Second Set: Mount Union 25, CWRU 20

  • The Spartans led 2-1 early before Mount Union rallied off four-straight points to take the lead.

  • The Purple Raiders led by as many as seven points in the frame, going ahead 13-6, but an 8-3 rally pulled CWRU back within two points.

  • The Spartans were still down two at 19-17, but Mount Union scored six of the final nine points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

  • Zarow finished the set with six kills and five digs to lead the Spartans.

Third Set: CWRU 25, Mount Union 17

  • Zarow opened the third set with a kill to break Mount Union's serve and start a 4-0 rally, as CWRU led wire-to-wire in the stanza.

  • The Spartans built an eight-point lead at 12-4 on a kill by sophomore Olivia Myers, and again at 18-10 on a kill by junior Madeline Halter.

  • Mount Union pulled within five points at 20-15, but the Spartans scored five of the last seven points in the set and closed out the 25-17 win on a kill by first-year Ava Felgar.

Fourth Set: Mount Union 25, CWRU 19

  • The fourth set was the closest-played one of the match with nine ties and four lead changes.

  • The Spartans found themselves down 8-4 early but scored four consecutive points, tying the match on a kill by Goodpaster.

  • After Mount Union scored to regain the lead, CWRU rallied off three-straight points, taking an 11-9 lead on an ace from Basinger.

  • A kill by Zarow put CWRU ahead 14-13, but the Purple Raiders quickly regained the lead, outscoring the Spartans 12-5 down the stretch to wrap up the match victory.

Spartan Notes

  • Case Western Reserve lost its first match of the season for the second year in a row, falling to 15-9 in openers since 2002.

  • The Spartans fell to 4-24 against Mount Union since the 2002 season.

  • Junior Sophia Datto had 13 digs on Tuesday to increase her career total to 985. She is now just 15 digs away from becoming the 22nd player in program history with 1,000 or more career digs.

The Spartans will travel to Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio for the 2026 Great Lakes Cross Over this weekend. CWRU is slated to face Kenyon at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, before batting Heidelberg at 9:00 a.m. and Hanover at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6.
