Box Score Case Western Reserve University senior left-handed pitcher Nick Denove allowed one run over seven innings of work on Saturday afternoon to help lead the Spartans to an 11-1 win over John Carroll University at Nobby's Ballpark.
The win raised the Spartans' record to 14-13 overall, while John Carroll dropped to 9-11 following the loss.
Denove failed to walk a batter in the game and struck out a career-high 10 batter. He picked up the win to improve to 1-3 on the campaign, while lowering his ERA to 4.54.
The CWRU offense totaled 12 hits on Saturday and drew an additional seven walks. Junior first baseman Nick Talarico went three-for-five at the plate with a run and two RBIs, while sophomore third baseman Zack Carinci and first-year outfielder Nick Harms each plated two runs apiece.
After John Carroll scored a run on three hits against Denove in the top of the first inning, Denove held the Blue Streaks scoreless on three hits over the remainder of his outing. Meanwhile, CWRU evened the score in the bottom of the second when junior second baseman Trey Haley scored on a two-out single by junior catcher Jack Anderson. In the bottom of the third, the Spartans took the lead on a wild pitch that scored Talarico from third, and then added two more runs on a two-out error, and an additional two on a single by Carinci that extended the team's lead to 6-1.
Back-to-back two RBI singles by Harms and Talarico in the fifth put the Spartans ahead 10-1, and junior outfielder Flynn Lenahan doubled in the sixth and later scored on a wild pitch to push CWRU's lead to 11-1.
Denove left after throwing just 91 pitches over seven innings, and first-year southpaw Alex Warner and sophomore right-handed pitcher Matthew DuBois each threw scoreless innings to close out the win for the Spartans.
John Carroll starter John Gavric allowed three runs in two innings and suffered the loss to fall to 0-3 on the season.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Monday, April 11, as the team travels to Adrian, Michigan for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Adrian College Bulldogs.
