Offense Leads Baseball to Upset Over No. 8 Baldwin Wallace

Box Score

Led by a rejuvenated offensive attack, the Case Western Reserve University baseball team upset eighth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University 12-7 on Thursday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 13-13 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 17-4.

Four Spartans, junior catcher Jack Anderson, sophomore third baseman/pitcher Zack Carinci, graduate student designated hitter Tre Armstrong, and junior second baseman Trey Haley, each had multi-hit games for CWRU, which totaled 13 hits in the contest. Anderson, Carinci, Haley, and senior outfielder Cole Jarrett all drove in multiple runs as well.

Case Western Reserve opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with two runs. After Armstrong and junior first baseman Nick Talarico singled to lead off the inning, junior outfielder Kevin Mackenzie used a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. Jarrett followed with a sacrifice fly to score Talarico and allow Armstrong to move to third. A single from Haley sent Armstrong to the plate, giving CWRU a 2-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets responded with four runs in the next frame to take a two-run lead. Graduate student pitcher Evan Faxon held the visitors scoreless for the rest of his time in the game, allowing the Spartans to come back and take the lead in the fourth inning. Faxon (5-0) earned the win by pitching six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. His 52 strikeouts this season lead the University Athletic Association and are tied for ninth most in a single season in program history.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Spartans loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk. Haley then delivered a single to center field which scored Mackenzie and Armstrong to tie the game at 4. Following a walk by graduate student shortstop Jacob Lott, a wild pitch gave CWRU the lead when Jarrett scored. With two runners on base, Anderson singled to left center field to bring two more runs across and cap a five-run inning. Jarrett added to the Spartan lead in the next frame with a run-scoring single, putting the home team ahead 8-4.

The Spartans added two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, building a seven-run advantage. In the sixth, Anderson scored on an errant throw, and an Armstrong single delivered another run. Armstrong went three-for-four in the contest, driving in a run and scoring twice.

Carinci plated a pair with a single in the seventh. The CWRU starting third baseman finished the game on the mound, allowing one run in one and two-third innings while striking out two batters. At the plate, he went three-for-four with a walk and two runs batted in.

All 13 of the Spartan hits in the contest were singles, with six of those hits delivering runs. Case Western Reserve last scored 12 runs in a 12-3 win at Emory on March 27.

CWRU finishes its eight-game homestand on Sunday, when the team hosts John Carroll University at Nobby's Ballpark at 12 p.m.
