Baseball Drops Two to No. 1 Marietta

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader to #1 Marietta College at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday afternoon, falling 9-0 in the first game and 3-0 in the second.

The Spartans drop to 12-13 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 21-3.

Game 1: #1 Marietta 9, CWRU 0

Case Western Reserve recorded eight hits in the first contest, including two-hit games from junior catcher Jack Anderson, first-year center fielder Nick Harms, and junior first baseman Nick Talarico.

Marietta scored two runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to build a 6-0 lead. CWRU threatened with two baserunners in each of the first three innings but could not score. The Spartan hitters were unable to solve the Marietta pitching staff.

Sophomore Reece Marley (3-3) took the loss for Case Western Reserve, allowing two earned runs on three hits in three innings. He added three strikeouts.

Game 2: #1 Marietta 3, CWRU 0

Sophomore third baseman Zack Carinci and graduate student shortstop Jacob Lott each had two hits in the second game of the doubleheader, including a double from Lott.

Marietta scored two runs in the second inning, but senior pitcher Willem Bouma and sophomore pitcher Tyler Horvath shut down the Pioneers over the next five frames. Bouma (0-3) took the hard-luck loss, allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout in three and two-third innings. After coming on with two outs in the fourth inning, Horvath was lights out on the mound until the eighth. He struck out four batters in four innings, allowing just four hits and a walk. The Pioneers added a run in the penultimate frame, pushing their lead to three.

Anderson threw out two runners trying to steal in the second contest, increasing his total to 11 on the season. Runners are successful on only 32% of their attempts against the junior Spartan catcher, who leads the University Athletic Association in runners caught stealing.

The Spartans continue their non-conference homestand on Thursday when the team hosts #8 Baldwin Wallace for a single game at 4 p.m.
