Spartan Women's Tennis Places Fourth at 2022 UAA Championship

The 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team finished fourth at the 2022 University Athletic Association following a hard-fought 5-1 loss to 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in the Third-Place Match of the championship tournament at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Sunday.

The Spartans fall to 16-4 on the season, while the Tartans improve to 15-6. Fourth place is the best UAA finish in program history.

After CWRU dropped the second and third doubles matches by identical 3-8 scores, first-years Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey defeated Lindy Cornwall and Bin Zheng 8-5 at first doubles to put the Spartans on the board heading into singles play. Junior Nina Hoog and sophomore Pallavi Goculdas lost 3-8 to Janabelle Wu and Crystal Zhou at second doubles, while junior Savannah Bright and first-year Anna Kan lost 3-8 to Zoe Angell and Megan Qiang at third doubles.

Following losses at fourth and fifth singles, first-year Madeleine Eiss battled Qiang at sixth singles. After Eiss dropped the first set 1-6, she came back to tie the score in the second set at five. Though Qiang earned the next point, Eiss forced a tiebreaker to keep Case Western Reserve alive in the match. She dropped the tiebreaker 2-7 and the set 6-7, ending the match with Carnegie Mellon's fifth point.

When play was halted, the Spartans held second-set leads in two of the three remaining matches. At third singles, first-year Radha Patel led Cornwall 7-5, 3-1, and at second singles McCloskey led Zhou 6-4, 4-3. Kassaie lost 1-6 to Sarah Yang in the first set with the second set tied at four.

The Spartans will now await the announcement of the field for the 2022 NCAA Division III Championships, with CWRU a strong candidate to receive an at-large bid to the tournament. Team selections, the full bracket and host sites for the first three rounds will be posted to ncaa.com by noon on Monday, May 9. The singles and doubles draws will be released on ncaa.com on Wednesday, May 11.
