The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team secured its third consecutive victory over a ranked opponent, beating 13th-ranked Washington and Lee University 7-2 on Sunday at the UMW Tennis Center in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
The Spartans improved to 12-1 with the win after going 3-0 at the Blue-Gray Invitational on the campus of the University of Mary Washington. The Generals drop to 7-3.
CWRU started the match with a doubles sweep. First-years Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey won 8-3 over Taylor Garcia and Izzy Koziol at first doubles. First-year Radha Patel and sophomore Katherine Wang followed with an 8-7 (8-6) win over Becket Waters and Nell Covington at third doubles. At second doubles, junior Nina Hoog and sophomore Pallavi Goculdas completed the sweep by winning 8-5 over Kaitlyn Chalker and Marta Mikos.
McCloskey picked up the first singles victory for Case Western Reserve, defeating Koziol 6-3, 6-0. The Spartans clinched the match at fifth singles when first-year Anna Kan beat Chalker 6-2, 6-1. Patel added a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mikos at third singles, and Kassaie put CWRU up 7-0 with a 5-7, 6-1, 10-6 win at first singles over Garcia.
Both first-year Madeleine Eiss and Goculdas dropped three-set singles matches, with Eiss falling 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 8-10 at fourth singles and Goculdas falling 7-5, 2-6, 8-10 at sixth singles.
The Spartans return home for a three-match weekend on Friday, April 1, facing #29 Christopher Newport at 7 p.m. CWRU also welcomes Oberlin on Saturday, April 2 at 1:30 p.m. and #20 Denison on Sunday, April 3 at 12:30 p.m.
