The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team defeated a top-20 opponent on the second straight day, beating 19th-ranked Skidmore 6-3 on Saturday at the UMW Tennis Center in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
The Spartans improve to 11-1 on the season while the Thoroughbreds fall to 5-3.
CWRU started the match with a doubles sweep. First-years Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey bested Grace Truong and Chanhtel Thongphok 8-1 at first doubles to get the Spartans on the board. At second doubles, sophomore Pallavi Goculdas and junior Nina Hoog followed with an 8-5 win over Lily Feldman and Audrey Soohoo. First-year Radha Patel and sophomore Katherine Wang completed the sweep by beating Sofia Carlsson and Konika Dhull 8-4 at third doubles.
Patel started singles play by dropping just one point, beating Truong 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles to give Case Western Reserve a 4-0 lead in the match. Kassaie clinched the match at first singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Katherine Almquist. First-year Anna Kan added the final point in the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at fifth singles over Thongphok.
Both McCloskey and first-year Madeleine Eiss dropped hard-fought three-set matches. McCloskey fell 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-10 to Feldman at second singles and Eiss lost 7-5, 2-6, 4-10 to Dhull at third singles. The Thoroughbreds other point came at sixth singles.
Case Western Reserve wraps up the Blue-Gray Invite with a match against #13 Washington & Lee at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
